STRIP-MINING THE MUSIC HEADLINES

If Music News Were A Precious Resource, We’d Piddle It Away Like This

STEWART, RHINO TEAM FOR COMPILATIONS
Martha Stewart and Rhino will jointly produce and distribute a series of compilation albums, beginning with the10/ 5 release of "Martha Stewart Living's Spooky Scary Sounds for Halloween." The set will collect eerie sounds such as howling winds and rattling chains. The second release will be a Christmas compilation. "We know that recorded audio elements can add an air of elegance, mystery, romance and magic to any entertainment event," Stewart said. "That's why I've included what I like to call 'Martha's Moans,' a collection of my best private moments."

IN A TRIBUTE TO STABBING WESTWARD
A 24-year-old Florida resident is in stable condition after being stabbed during the Palm Beach, FL, stop of the Warped Tour, Launch.com reported. During NOFX's performance, Jacob Staley was confronted in the mosh pit by 30-year-old Lonnie Griffin, who asked Staley, "What the fuck you looking at?" Griffin then punched Staley with his left hand and stabbed him with his right. "Nothing like this has ever happened before in six years of the Warped Tour," said tour founder Kevin Lyman. "Whoever heard of violence in the mosh pit?"

MEXICAN POP STAR MAY BE EXTRADITED
Brazil will recommend that the Latin Madonna, Gloria Trevi, be extradited to Mexico to face charges of corrupting minors and kidnapping. Prosecutors also suggest that Trevi's manager, Sergio Andrade, be sent back to Mexico as well. Trevi, Andrade and a backup singer were arrested in Rio de Janeiro in January. Trevi and the backup singer are charged with corrupting minors and kidnapping, while Andrade faces an additional charge of rape (hitsdailydouble.com, 5/26). Andrade, Trevi and the backup singer are accused of luring young girls into their "training program for future stars" and then turning them into virtual sex slaves. "In other countries, these actions are commonly known as casting couch experiences," an associate offered. "Do you think these young girls are the first to trade sexual services for the possibility of success?"

"WHITE" SUPREMACY
The Beatles
self-titled 1968 release—commonly referred to as "The White Album"—was certified an 18 million-seller by the RIAA in the month of July. The certification makes it the best-selling Beatles album to date and ties the release with Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" for #6 on the all-time list. In the same ceremony, the RIAA again failed to award any certificate at all to Joey Scarborough for his classic tune "Believe It Or Not (Theme From ‘Greatest American Hero')."

PUFFY COURT CASE PUSHED TO LATER DATE
A judge said Monday that Sean "Puffy'" Combs' trial on gun possession and bribery charges will start late this year or early next year. State Supreme Court Justice Charles Solomon told the accused to return Sept. 13 for a status conference and, if possible, he will set a trial date for later this year. "If there is any way the case can be resolved for any of these defendants without a trial, don't hesitate," the Judge offered. With that said, Puffy and his crew took the opportunity to shoot down witnesses and prosecutors as a means of coming to a speedy resolution of the case.

LOUD AND CLEAR
Dwarfing the Middle East peace talks in importance, Loud Records is set for a 10/5 release of a collection of 13 songs which will bring together the kings of the hard rock and rap worlds. The disc, titled "Loud Rocks," unites System Of A Down and producer Rick Rubin with Wu-Tang Clan, Sevendust with Xzibit, and Ozzy Osbourne and Tony Iommi with (once again) Wu-Tang Clan. "‘Loud Rocks' is about an evolution of two cultures coming to a new level together. It's about pushing the envelope and raising the standard," said project executive producer Amy Finnerty. "But most importantly, it's about close to a kilo of Chronic and 50 or so hours of free studio time."

IS IT ANY WONDER THAT I'LL REJECT YOU FIRST?
An English poet is claiming that she co-wrote "at least 50% of the lyrics" to David Bowie's 1977 single "Heroes." According to Rollingstone.com, Shuna Shelley has documents, including a 1973 diary, which substantiate her claim that she sent a three-page poem (which included the lyrics) to Bowie in the spring of 1974. "I wanted to become the female Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen," Shelley said. "I thought David Bowie could be the prince of pop in England…I really believed that with our combined talents, we could be king and queen." As to why she waited more than two decades to make her claim, Shelley replied, "I heard the song used on those Microsoft ads and I thought, ‘Now, there's a company that will pay to shut me up.'"

COVER ME
According to Launch.com, Rage Against The Machine has been in the studio with producer Rick Rubin working on an album of cover tunes set for release in time for Christmas 2000. Lead singer Tom Morello said he hopes the band can release the disc in conjunction with a live CD (which the band has yet to record) as a two-CD set. Artists on Rage's short list include Eric B. & Rakim, EPMD, Devo, MC5 and The Stooges. "And there's maybe even a Rush lick thrown in there," Morello said. "And, if we have time, that kickass theme from ‘Greatest American Hero.'"
