Veteran rocker Rod Stewart underwent a throat operation in Los Angeles earlier this month, to remove a growth on his thyroid that the singer originally feared was a sign of cancer, British paper The Sun reports. After doctors discovered a growth on his thyroid during a routine exam, Stewart, 55, feared that the lump would affect his voice. In early May, after undergoing a one-hour surgical procedure at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, the veteran singer was told that the lump was not malignant. Reports that Stewart now sounds more like Barbra Streisand could not be confirmed… Stax Records veteran Wilson Pickett picked up three Handy Awards Thursday, including the Comeback Album of the Year at the 2000 W.C. Handy Awards, the most prestigious in the world of blues. Pickett also nailed Soul/Blues Album of the Year and Soul/Blues Male Artist of the Year, all for his Rounder album "It's Harder Now." After walking off stage with his third award, Pickett was overheard remarking, "I just clocked James Brown with one of these things. They really are handy!"… Tommy Lee will spend five days in the L.A. lockup for allegedly boozing it up while on probation for assaulting his on-again, off-again spouse, Pamela Anderson. And it was reportedly Pamela who ratted him out. Malibu Superior Court Judge Lawrence Mira found Lee, 37, in violation of his probation and ordered him immediately remanded to jail. The judge also extended Lee's probation to May 26, 2003, reinstated random drug testing for the musician and ordered him to enroll in Alcoholics Anonymous. The judge suggested that Lee attend all-nude strip joints from now on, because "they don't serve alcohol"… Despite Web rumors to the contrary, Van Halen guitarist Eddie Van Halen does not have cancer. While the Internet was buzzing with the claim that the heavy smoker and former alcoholic had cancer of the tongue, a spokeswoman from the University of Texas' M.D. Anderson Cancer Center denied those reports. "There is some inaccurate information out and about," spokeswoman Jane Brust told Reuters. "Let me confirm that he does not have cancer." The incorrect information was posted on the Van Halen News Desk site among others. Brust verified that Van Halen had undergone a thorough investigation and was found not to have cancer. The guitarist did, however, decide to take part in an outpatient clinical trial to prevent cancer… Mick Jagger joined in song with his Rolling Stones bandmates Friday at the funeral of his mother, Eva. Mourners, including Jagger and fellow Stones Keith Richards, Ron Wood and Charlie Watts, sang the gospel song "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" during the funeral service at St. Andrew's Church in Ham, on the southwestern outskirts of London. Some 200 mourners joined Jagger, his father, Joe, and brother Chris in paying tribute to Eva Jagger, who died May 18 in London at age 87. Mick Jagger was accompanied by his former partner, model Jerry Hall, and their four children. His former wife, Bianca, and their daughter, Jade Jagger, also were among the mourners. Despite fervent requests from the crowd, the band neglected to bash out either "Mother's Little Helper"or "Sympathy For the Devil" as encores at the performance.
