SIX DEGREES OF INDIGESTION

Combining Oasis, Chuck D, Lars Ulrich, Johnny Cash And James Brown Without Once Mentioning Kevin Bacon

THE THREE FACES OF LARS
Napster enemy #1 Lars Ulrich has done a 180-degree turn in his anti-download stance. The Metallica drummer has a side biz, The Music Company, which promotes artists online. To promote one of the featured acts, Goudie, the Music Company is offering--you guessed it--MP3 downloads. Ulrich explained his actions as not being hypocritical. "This is different," he said, "because I stand to gain monetarily from this."

ESCAPING HIS OWN PRISON
Citing the tried and true "personal and professional differences," Creed has parted ways with outspoken bassist Brian Marshall. In a statement released Wednesday (8/9), the band thanked Marshall "for his participation in [the band's] success and wishes him all the best in his future endeavors." Back in June, Marshall ruffled some feathers when, on-air at KNDD in Seattle, he said Pearl Jam wished they could write lyrics as well as Creed singer Scott Stapp. The band called the parting with Marshall "friendly." Guitarist Mark Tremonti clarified the statement, saying, "Well, it was three-quarters friendly anyway."

NOT THE FIRST TIME THEY'VE BEEN STONED
Those crazy Oasis boys were once again driven offstage by projectiles. Britain's NME reports drummer Alan White was hit by a rock during the band's Sunday (8/6) performance at the Sudvest Festival in Lisbon, Portugal. Fans reportedly began hurling rocks and bottles at the band about 30 minutes into the Oasis set. Notoriously calm and level-headed frontman Liam Gallagher asked the audience to stop, then stormed off the stage. Oasis experienced similar problems two weeks ago during the Paleo Festival near Geneva, Switzerland (hitsdailydouble.com, 7/27). The crowd also pelted the band with rubbish. Apparently, Oasis fans know too well that words will never harm the band.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF FARM CLUB
To coincide with Farm Aid's 15th anniversary show, Redline Entertainment is readying a double-CDwith live tracks from--that's right, tractor-breath--15 years of Farm Aid concerts. The CD—which features performances by Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Sheryl Crow, Johnny Cash and a Beck-Willie Nelson duet—is slated for a Sept. 12 release. All proceeds from the sales of the CD will go to Farm Aid, which has raised more than $15 million for struggling farmers since its inception in 1985. Farm Aid 2000 will be held at Nissan Pavilion in Bristow, VA, on Sept. 17, near the site of the last family-owned farm in all of America.

PAPA'S GOT A BRAND NEW SECURITY CHIEF
Richard Glenn
, former security chief for James Brown, has been charged with arson and theft. In April, Glenn allegedly stole $75,000 and later set fire to Brown's office to hide the theft. The fire destroyed many of the singer's priceless mementos and music. Authorities say the fire could have been contained earlier if it hadn't been for the crowd outside insisting that they didn't need no water. According to sources at the scene, the crowd also, apparently, urged the fire department to "let the motherfucker burn."

THE SHADOW KNOWS
Confrontation Camp
, the side project of Public Enemy's Chuck D and Professor Griff, is set to headline opening night festivities for the Shadow Convention, to take place Sunday (8/13) at the Patriotic Hall in Los Angeles. The band is slated to take the stage at 9:30, after speakers Gary Hart and Warren Beatty. The band made an appearance at the Philadelphia Shadow Convention, which coincided with the GOP gathering. Said Chuck D: "The Democratic Convention will touch upon a lot of issues that need to be talked about. We will be there to supplement those issues; whereas, at the Republican Convention, we were there to attack." Added Professor Griff: "The Democrats will have a better stable of bitches."
