BOLTED DOWN
Maybe the kids will dig this happenin' thing they call bluematter. As more companies line up to participate in the Universal Music Group's digital download trial balloon, UMG and RioPort have signed a deal that will bring songs from UMG artists to RioPort's music service at Bolt, its e-tail site geared towards 15-to-20-year olds. Everybody knows kids that age only obsess about getting some e-tail. You there, pay attention. There will be a testosterone on this material.

MCCARTNEY BELIEVES IN MAGEX
Noted investor and sometime musician Sir Paul McCartney has written a big check to digital commerce services company Magex. Magex, which will also be involved in bluematter trials, provides copyright protection, a secure payment facility, digital rights management and a full apologia for "Say Say Say." McCartney's investment will almost cover the company's cost for the announcement party trumpeting McCartney's investment. If the walrus was Paul, what does that make us?

BREAKING SOUND
Soundbreak.com has formed a new unit to bring its streaming media content to broadband and wireless markets. Jon Eastman, formerly at Pioneer, comes in as Executive Director of Advanced Technology and Keeper of the Cat o' Nine Tales to lead the initiative. President/CEO Lisa Z. Crane said, "The alliances that Jon Eastman will bring to Soundbreak.com will take us to the next level of technology and, in the long term, provide a major source of revenue—just as soon as he helps me figure out how this darn Gnutella works... Will someone get me that scamp Sean Fanning on the phone?"

NO STRINGS ATTACHED
Also getting in the wireless game is SpinRecords.com, partnering with MobileEngines to deliver content to wireless devices. SpinRecords is offering unlimited digital downloads for $4.95 a month. The company says that by the year 2003 there will be 186 million wireless subscribers, of which a grand total of 27 will pay $4.95 for unlimited downloads of bands they've never heard of.
