WIN LENNY BEER’S MONEY, AND NOT BY BEATING HIM AT GOLF

Self-Promotion Takes A Lucrative
Left Turn With This Nutty Contest
There's only one thing better than winning $1,000, and that's taking it from notorious skinflint lenny beer',390,400);">lenny beer',390,400);">Lenny Beer. While the rest of the industry is on summer vacation in St. Barts, we're using our abacuses to calculate album sales for our weekly contest.

Here's the deal: Every week we pick three records. People just like you become contestants on the Web site and predict how much those records are going to sell in a given week. Whoever comes the closest to the actual number gets a check (which we're assured won't bounce) from Leonard J. Beer, Editor In Chief, HITS Magazine.

And since nobody goes on this hopeless little Web site anyway, your odds of winning are actually several billion times better than your chances of winning the California lottery. Hey, it may not be $40 million, but it'll buy a lot of chopped liver.

One of the many winners was our pal Pete Ganbarg at Arista. He won the 7/01 contest, predicting that Lil' Kim, Nelly and Kelly Price would sell 600,000 units combined. In fact, the trio of records moved 597,332. Not a bad guess, especially considering he's in A&R.

"Two days after I got the check [yes, he actually got the check], I was driving my new car to the office and I was calling into my voicemail," Ganbarg said when we told him we were from Brill's Content. "My car was new and it was new voicemail—since under Clive nobody had voicemail—and I'm dialing numbers in stop-and-go traffic, and next thing you know… Well, you can fill in the blanks. I got the estimate and it's like, a thousand-something dollars. But if I file with my insurance company, my rates will double. So it's going towards the accident."

The moral is, win Beer's money and let your troubles fade away. But please be careful out there.
