THE VEVO VIEW

Report Shows Big Gains in Views, Platform Diversity; Miley, P!nk, Thicke Among Top Clips

VEVO has a whole new batch of data reflecting viewership growth and platform diversification over the past year. The U.S. Music Video Viewership Report 2013 can pretty much be summarized with a single word: "up." But if you wanted to add a few more words, you couldn’t go wrong with "Miley," "P!nk," "Thicke," "Lorde," "Rihanna" and "Avicii."

Global views for the year were up to 55 billion, increasing 33% over 2012. Total videos viewed jumped 29%, to 12.3 billion. Monthly views, meanwhile, vaulted from 3.8 billion in December 2012 to 5.5 billion last December.

The site and its attendant apps boasted 243 million unique viewers as of Dec. 2013, with 165m clips viewed every day around the world (a 40% jump over the prior December).

But what about how the videos were viewed, you ask? Mobile, tablet and connected-TV views spiked by 118% and by 176% worldwide over 2012; meanwhile, these forms of access accounted for 60% of U.S. monthly views as of December.

Lifetime app downloads jumped 66%, as consumers became increasingly accustomed to watching videos on their phones and other mobile devicesor on the same TVs that bring them the Olympics and House of Cards. This "growth away from the desktop," as the report terms it, naturally integrates VEVO into every facet of users’ lives.

Miley Cyrus earns a special section for setting two records with her zeitgeist-grabbing "Wrecking Ball" clip. The video’s unique combination of nudity, tears and construction materials helped it earn 19.3m views in its first day and certification with 100m views in just six days. The RCA lightning rod shattered her own viewing records for "We Can’t Stop," which got 12.3m views in its first 24 hours but took 37 days to get to 100m.

As to 2013’s most shared videos, P!nk f/Nate Ruess’ "Just Give Me a Reason" topped both the U.S. and global Top 5 lists. Robin Thicke’s "Blurred Lines" was #2 U.S. and #5 internationally. Rihanna’s "Stay," Lorde’s "Royals" and Imagine Dragons’ "Radioactive" round out the U.S. leaderboard, while the other global giants were Prince Royce’s "Darte Un Beso" (#2), Romeo Santos’ "Propuesto Indecente" and Avicii’s "Wake Me Up."

The report further chronicles VEVO’s #1 rating in music for 49 consecutive months by comScore Video Metrix, notes the company’s 900+ partnerships with major brands and outlines the expansion of its original content, among other achievements.

Call us sentimental, but what we’ll remember most is that nutty naked chick on a wrecking ball.
