RCA PERCHED ON TOP OF MEDIABASE MIDYEAR CHART

Breaking News: There Are 10 Labels in
the YTD Airplay Top 10
Right on cue (not you, Eddy—you’ve hogged enough editorial space of late), just ahead of the year’s halfway point, Mediabase’s Midyear Chart Share Report makes its grand entrance. This comprehensive label performance review makes use of Mediabase’s spin-based methodology to rank each label by percentage of chart share, both overall and by format, encompassing Top 40, Rhythmic, Urban, Urban AC, AC, Hot AC, Active Rock, Mainstream Rock, Alternative and Triple A. Got that? OK, let’s dive in—and give credit where credit is due.

As of the May 26 published charts in Mediabase, RCA leads the overall chart share with a 17.0% share, and EVP/GM Joe Riccitelli sticks another feather in his cap, which is starting to look like Crazy Horse’s headdress. Nipper is #1 year-to-date at Top 40—a powerful area of Mediabase due to its total number of stations (171), and large volume of spins—with 18.9%. It didn’t hurt to have a steady stream of smashes from Justin Timberlake, P!nk, Pitbull, Ke$ha and Kelly Clarkson. RCA also posts a #1 ranking at Urban AC, where it racked up a staggering 36.2% marketshare, as well as ranking #2 at Rhythmic, Urban, AC and Hot AC, while coming in third at Rock.

IGA is #2 overall and at Top 40 behind proven hit makers Maroon 5 as well as potent newcomers Imagine Dragons, Phillip Phillips and Kendrick Lamar.

In third place is Island Def Jam with a 12.7% share. Rick Sackheim’s posse scores the top chart share at Rhythmic and Urban, while also ranking #3 at Top 40. Multiple hits from Rihanna have been key to the IDJ success, along with 2 Chainz, Kanye West and Ne-Yo.

Republic is #4 overall at 11.8% as Charlie Walk settles in. The label has succeeded with a broad-based roster that includes Taylor Swift, Drake, Volbeat, Of Monsters and Men and Lil Wayne. Republic also has the distinction of crossing Florida Georgia Line from Country to Top 40 and Hot AC. This crew is Top 5 at every format except Urban AC, where it presently sits at #6.

Atlantic lands Top 5 slots at six different formats—Top 40, Rhythmic and Urban (part of a combined Urban unit with Warner Bros. and Roadrunner)—paced by multi-format scorer Bruno Mars. Right behind was sister label WBR, which has been growing as the year progresses as the Cameron Strang regime gets traction. The label remains #1 at Active Rock and Alternative thanks to the likes of Muse, Device and Atlas Genius. Peter Gray’s team also handled Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who went to #1 at Top 40 and Rhythmic with their first two singles.

Columbia came in seventh place, a hare behind the bunny (see what we just did?). Lee Leipsner’s promo team has also picked up steam in recent months, developing new acts Olly Murs and Krewella scoring hits alongside Calvin Harris, J. Cole and Train. And here comes Daft Punk, with what is shaping up as the song of the summer in "Get Lucky." Look for the label to gobble marketshare in the coming months.

Capitol sits in eighth place, as Greg Thompson makes hay with up-and-comers Emeli Sandé, Serena Ryder and Capital Cities, while also notching the first big radio hit for Swedish House Mafia.

Roadrunner is #9, led by Fun., but is being challenged by Epic, which took rookie Jonn Hart to #1 at Rhythmic, while seeing promising early results from comeback kids Ciara, Avril Lavigne and Sean Kingston.

Mediabase will finalize the 2013 chart year the week after Thanksgiving and will release the results in early December. But we’ve got miles to go before we get to that point. Isn’t competition fun?
