THE iPHONE 5: RUMOR HAS IT...

Bigger Screen, LTE Connectivity Could Be Among the Features of Apple’s Sixth-Gen Device
A couple of weeks ago iMore reported that Apple would be holding their iPhone 5 event on Sept. 12. It has since neen rumored that iPhone 5 pre-orders will begin that same day, with the release planned for nine days later (9/21a). The info on Apple pre-orders comes from sources that have provided iMore with accurate iPhone-related launch dates in the past.

While iPhone events and pre-orders haven't always occurred at the same time, last year Apple introduced the iPhone 4S on Oct. 4, 2011, and made pre-orders available on Oct. 7. The first round of releases followed on Oct. 14. So these projected dates do seem plausible.

As for the new iPhone itself, a picture has emerged on the web of what is alleged to be the next motherboard, the L.A. Times reports, and it seems to indicate the new iPhone will be Apple's first LTE phone. That means the company will finally make the jump from 3G to LTE, or the next generation of mobile wireless data.

Another feature on the motherboard that has been changed is its digitizer, which could be further evidence that the iPhone 5 will have a larger screen, as has been rumored for months. Since it introduced the first iPhone in 2007, Apple has never messed with its 3.5-inch screen. Now, the consensus is that another half-inch will be added to the sixth-generation iPhone screen. A longer display would bring the smartphone near a 16:9 screen ratio.

The sixth-generation iPhone's SIM card slot also appears to have been changed, according to 9 to 5 Mac. The new motherboard appears to show the upcoming phone will have a smaller SIM card slot than on the iPhone 4 or 4S.

The photos were posted online by a forum user on the Chinese website WeiPhone.com, but 9 to 5 Mac said it reported the photos because this is the same user who also posted photos of the iPhone 4S' motherboard last year in the months leading up to the phone's release.

Last week iMore reported that Apple planned to roll its new, smaller Dock connector out across their full range of iOS devices this fall, including the new iPhone, iPod touch, iPod nano, iPad and iPad mini. In the past, Apple has made new iPod devices available quickly, if not immediately following the event, but has also had several weeks between announcement and release, especially for brand new devices like the iPad mini.

If all of this info pans out, and Apple introduces both the iPhone 5 and the iPad mini on Sept. 12, it will make for one of the most significant events in company history. But as iMore points out, nothing is confirmed until an Apple executive holds it up on stage, or Apple puts out a press releases, but if the Sept. 12 event date proves accurate, we'll find out in just under a month.
