Mumford & Sons defied the odds and seized Album of the Year. Fun. beat out some incredibly fierce competition for Best New Artist and Song of the Year ("We Are Young"). And Gotye’s ubiquitous “Somebody That I Used to Know” earned Record of the Year honors (not to mention Best Pop Duo/Group Performance) and his album Making Mirrors took home Best Alternative Music Album.
The Black Keys kicked up some powerful early momentum, grabbing trophies for Rock Song, Rock Album and Rock Performance—not to mention Producer of the Year for the duo’s Dan Auerbach, who also shared Dr. John’s win for Blues Album, which he helmed.
And Frank Ocean, a favorite for several top prizes, walked away with Best Urban Contemporary Album and shared in the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration Grammy for “No Church in the Wild.”
Taylor Swift (who shared a Best Song Written for Visual Media win with her Hunger Games collaborators Civil Wars) deserves a shout-out from multiple fellow nominees, since nearly every time there was a cutaway from a performance to her, she was singing along with aplomb.
Speaking of performances, the live segments by Justin Timberlake, The Lumineers, Bruno Mars (with Sting, Rihanna and multiple Marleys), Mumford, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, the all-star tribute to Levon Helm (with Elton John, Alabama Shakes' Brittany Howard, Zac Brown, Mumford, et al) and LL Cool J/Chuck D, among others, got folks chattering. In fact, we'd go so far as to say it was a pretty stellar show. (Ken Ehrlich, holla!)
We’ll go over the perfs, the parties, the predictions (Paul Grein, holla!) and the sales peaks very soon, so watch this space. In the meantime, here are the winners in the key categories.
