We Shine a Light on this Sweet Talker's Rising Star Power

By Samantha Hissong

I’ve been on a real “girls rule, boys drool” tip recently. And after talking one of my best girlfriends into ditching the latest brooding musician who regularly cheats on his multiple girlfriends--while donning skin-tight jeans and a bed-head that takes two hours to perfect--I needed a severe boost of empowering womanhood. And hell yeah, I got some.

Lava/Republic
’s Jessie J is a powerhouse, a live wire and the kind of heroine who’ll kick you in the teeth before kissing you on the cheek. She blends pop with R&B, soul and splashes of hip-hop, while promoting self-confidence and encouraging women to embrace both their flaws and their sexuality. Having already achieved superstardom in the U.K., Jessie J appears to be ready for her U.S. dominion.

And last night, the 26-year-old, U.K. singer/songwriter got my ass, which, unfortunately, is getting increasingly more office chair-shaped, movin’ for a sensational set at the sold-out El Rey Theatre.

The crowd was filled with West Coast radio reps, including KAMP's Booker, Radio Disney's Kristin Yasuda, MYfm's Brandon Bell and WestwoodOne's Jason Bowers, along with the label's Tom Mackay, Amanda Dobbins, Artie Gentile and Rob Harvey.

Armed with high heels and even higher kicks, and backed by a full band, Jessie J proves to be an all around performer who, quite frankly, makes the stage her bitch.

Highlights of the evening included the title-track from her just-released, third full-length, Sweet Talker, its current single, “Burnin’ Up” f/2 Chainz, and 2011’s #1 U.K. Single, “Domino,” along with the punchy burst of inspiration that is “Nobody’s Perfect.”

The new album is currently #4 at iTunes in the U.K. and #10 in the U.S. Meanwhile, according to Mediabase, “Burnin’ Up” was among the Top 10 Most Added at Pop radio this week as it prepares for a chart debut.

"Bang Bang” w/Ariana Grande + Nicki Minaj is currently #4 at Pop, with its divalicious eyes set on the top slot and Top 15 at both Rhythm and Hot AC. It’s also Top 15 on Shazam’s U.S. chart, Top 30 on the U.K. chart and the #6 iTunes single in both the U.S and the U.K.

Cumulatively, her YouTube channel has amassed over one billion views, and her official music videos alone make up 851m+ views.

As a songwriter who snagged a Sony ATV pub deal at a young age, she’s written for Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus, among others. She’s worked closely with Claude Kelly, Cirkut, Ammo, Max Martin, Dr. Luke and Benny Blanco. In 2011, she won the Critic’s Choice Brit Award. From 2012-13, she served as a coach on The Voice U.K.

Overall, J’s sold over 3m singles in the U.S. and well over 10m worldwide.

Inspired by a healthy dose of "you go, girl," I indulged in some online shopping, browsing for the perfect pair of stiletto heels to pierce the lie-spitting tongue of the next wimp who tries to mess with one of my girls.
