Thanks to 15k sales at Amazon MP3 for $2.99 apiece—which don’t count on that other chart—Def Jam/IDJ’s Frank Ocean lands at #4, with close to 60k.
NAS SPRINGS TO LIFE!
Kidz Bop Kidz, Dark Knight Rises Debut Top 10; Amazon Promotion Helps Boost Frank Ocean
Just a few years ago, he was proclaiming Hip Hop Is Dead, but Def Jam/IDJ rapper Nas proves otherwise as his tenth studio album, Life Is Good, debuts at #1 on the HITS Album sales chart with nearly 140k.

That’s enough to unseat last week’s champ, Atlantic’s Zac Brown Band, who slip a notch to #2 with 76k for a two-week total of more than 315k.

Razor & Tie returns with a 22nd volume of its cottage industry Kidz Bop Kidz collection, debuting at #3 with 64k.

Thanks to 15k sales at Amazon MP3 for $2.99 apiece—which don’t count on that other chart—Def Jam/IDJ’s Frank Ocean lands at #4, with close to 60k, while Island/IDJ’s Justin Bieber drops to #5, giving the label’s Barry Weiss and Steve Bartels three of the Top 5.

Atlantic’s Phil Collins Hits collection re-enters at #6, one of four titles in the Top 50, along with New Elektra’s Bruno Mars (#12), Atlantic’s Shinedown (#21) and Hollywood’s Demi Lovato (#28), who are beneficiaries of an Amazon 99-cent promotion, which do count on the SoundScan charts because they are each out over four weeks.

Syco/Columbia’s One Direction, the first 2012 to sell more than a million (#7), XL/Columbia’s Adele (#8) and A&M/Octone’s Maroon 5 (#10) round out the Top 10, with Hans Zimmer’s Dark Knight Rises soundtrack (WaterTower) a new chart entry at #9.

Other Top 50 newcomers include Fearless’ Arizona punk-rockers Pierce the Veil (#11), Fallen SparksMatisyahu (#18), Eleven Seven Music’s punk supergroup Hellyeah (#20), ATO’s Old Crow Medicine Show (#26), Fret12’s Creed/Alterbridge guitarist Tremonti (#30), Relapse’s Baroness (#34) and Rainwater’s Citizen Cope (#45).

Biggest double-digit gainers of the week are Dualtone’s Lumineers (#3, +15%) and Broken Bow’s Jason Aldean (#35, +10%).

This week, Columbia’s Passion Pit, Mercury/IDJ’s Gaslight Anthem, Sony Music Nashville’s Love and Theft and Epic’s Jennifer Lopez hits collection all go to retail. Next big releases on tap are Def Jam/IDJ’s Rick Ross and S-Curve’s Joss Stone on July 31.
