THE VMAS: YOUR MOONMAN MISSION CONTROL

The Winners, the Music, the Outfits and the Drama as They Happen (Until We're Too Stoned)

We’ll be giving you updates of tonight’s MTV VMA winners, reports on outstanding perfs and peak moments as they come in.So stop by and hang out with us—the UMPG security staff is catering the party.

Pre-show awards:  Thirty Seconds to Mars claims Best Rock Video VMA for "Up in the Air," while P!nk & Nate Ruess snag Best Collaboration for "Just Give Me A Reason." Meanwhile, Austin Mahone and Ariana Grande perform a pre-show set.

Lady Gaga's "Applause" is the first perf of the official show, and features multiple onstage costume changes.

Selena Gomez gets Best Pop Video for "Come & Get It." She's followed by Miley Cyrus and her crew of plushies, who perform "We Can't Stop" in all its twerk-tastic glory; she's joined onstage by Robin Thicke for a sexed-up, booty-shaking medley/mash-up also featuring 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar.

Lil' Kim (accompanied by acolyte Iggy Azalea) gives a shout-out to Brooklyn. They award Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Best Hip-Hop Video for "Can't Hold Us."

Thirty Seconds to Mars' Jared Leto steps out to introduce Kanye West

Daft Punk, Pharrell and Nile Rodgers award the Best Female Video statuette to Taylor Swift for "I Knew You Were Trouble."

Macklemore takes a second trophy for a second song: Best Video With a Social Message for "Same Love."

Intro'd by Jimmy Fallon, Video Vanguard winner Justin Timberlake comes out and kills with an extended medley, bringing NSYNC out for "Bye Bye Bye." Everyone in the audience knows these songs and sings along: Taylor, Gaga, Selena, Will Smith and, for all we know, Dame Judi Dench.

Best Song of the Summer: "Best Song Ever," by One Direction. Taylor Swift's mouthed "shut the fuck up," meanwhile (from 1D's earlier presenting spot), resonates through the twitterverse. Artist to Watch goes to Austin Mahone.

Speaking of Taylor, she presents Best Male Video to Bruno Mars for "Locked Out of Heaven." Mars performs the steamy "Gorilla."

Justin Timberlake wins Video of the Year for "Mirrors." Katy Perry, in a boxing-ring stage set up by the Brooklyn Bridge, knocks out her smash "Roar."

And that's a wrap, Brooklyn! See ya next year, everybody.
