A GREAT BIG JOHNSON!

Brushfire/Republic Singer/Songwriter Nails #1 Bow; Country Debuts, Vets Make Top 10 Twangy

Dude, it’s all good. Seriously, brah, you can totally chill, because Jack Johnson’s got this.

The Brushfire/Republic troubadour strums his way to a #1 bow on the HITS Album Sales Chart this week with a brisk 120k for his From Here to Now to You, making the retail world smell a lot like a UMPG “conference room.”

Johnson’s last release, 2010’s To the Sea, sold 243k out of the box and has moved 837k to date.

The rest of the Top 5 is all debuts, starting with Big Machine’s Justin Moore (96k) at #2, RCA Nashville’s Chris Young (#3, 56k), hip-hop comp MMG Presents Self Made, Vol. 3 at #4 and PRMD/Island/IDJ’s Avicii at #5.

The Country dudes both last dropped albums in 2011; Moore’s set bowed with 66k and is at the 563k mark, while Young debuted with 73k and has sold 441k so far.

The Top 10’s only other new release is Capitol Nashville’s Billy Currington at #8. It’s worth noting that in Moore, Young, Currington and Capitol Nashville chart vets Luke Bryan and Keith Urban (the latter last week’s #1), half of the Top 10 is Country, and three of those belong to Uni Nashville capo Mike Dungan.

Bryan and Urban retain the #6 and #7 spots, respectively, on this week’s chart; another Country breakout, Republic Nashville’s Florida Georgia Line, moved #16-15, down a mere 7%.

The biggest gainers in the Top 25 are Lava/Republic’s kiwi teen phenom Lorde (#25-23, +13%), whose The Love Club EP has sold more than 125k and is stoking demand for her full-length, Pure Heroine (due out 9/30), and KidinaKorner/Interscope’s Imagine Dragons (#24-22, +12%).

Streeting today are YM/CM/Republic goliath Drake, RCA rockers Kings of Leon, Warner Bros.Cher and Capitol’s Elton John. And the mad march into Q4 gets a little faster.
