Listening to Hot AC makes me want to stab myself in the neck with a fork. Music is supposed to inspire a physical reaction a bit livelier than hand holding and posting kitten videos on each other’s Facebook walls.

REMEMBER THE SWAGGER, IVANA URGES POMO PROGRAMMERS

Att'n: Your Instructions Are Immediately Below

THE AFTERLIFE: In this era of Modern Rock radio, PPM is the rule of law, in all of its counter-intuitiveness, narrow-focused, obsolete, half-assed methodology. It is not our format’s true blue friend. Here’s the upside: The music is better than it’s ever been. If someone had the foresight to give me a station to program (my dream market would be Chapel Hill or, perhaps, Boston, Minneapolis, N.Y.C., DC, Nashville, my approach would be thus: DO THE BEST RADIO THE MARKET HAS EVER SEEN. Keep it local, exciting, sexy (not creepy), current-based and the radio embodiment of the your best self. Stop with the overthinking and dumbing-down. The way to attract a new audience is to offer them something they haven’t heard elsewhere, and can’t imagine living without (like Facebook, which rendered Friendster, MySpace, et al. obsolete). Program as though you’re running an NPR station, relying solely on the financial support of your audience. Keeping your listener entertained (and tuned in) is your #1 priority. Take risks and encourage your staff to do the same. As I write this, I realize I’m talking about Leslie Fram’s approach at WRXP… Balance, balance, balance, I scream, sounding a bit unhinged (do as I say…), waiting for the other shoe to drop. One can’t program a male-focused station by only playing female-leaning pop songs. Personally, I have never been happier about the current state of music being played because I am, well, female. But I like rock music (listening to Hot AC makes me want to stab myself in the neck with a fork). Music is supposed to inspire a physical reaction a bit livelier than hand holding and posting kitten videos on each other’s Facebook walls. My friends, REMEMBER THE SWAGGER. Thankfully, we’ve recovered from the darkest days of rape rock, but if the pendulum swings too far in the other direction, we might as well say adios to the format. This phase will be over and you’ll be wondering what the hell just happened. And of course that means you should play the new Bush single, “The Afterlife,” because Gavin Rossdale’s got the swagger. And it was #2 Most Added this week, including KROQ, WEND, KROX, KRBZ, WZNE, WROX, WRXL and WARQ. And don’t forget about Kasabian’s “Days Are Forgotten,” and every song the Black Keys have committed to take, plus AWOLNATION and Tanlines (dance music can definitely swagger, especially “All of Me”)… The most in-your-face-blow-the-roof-off-the-sucker single out right now is The Heavy’s “What Makes A Good Man?” The response after I play it for programmers is most often “holy shit, that’s powerful!” If you’re not completely dead inside, I expect you’ll have the same reaction….Movie star-handsome Nick Petropoulos is traveling the country to set up the new Two Door Cinema Club single “Sleep Alone,” which you’ve now heard, loved, and committed to adding first-week…. The end of the long holiday weekend brought the return of The Killers, with “Runaways” garnering #1 Most Added action. The song will likely close out by next week, which is when the new Green Day single drops. Again, another one week close-out is anticipated, after which you will add The Heavy. Or you’ll freeze for another four weeks, exhausted from adding two records in two weeks… The Capitol gang had a breakthrough week on Morning Parade, including KRBZ, WBOS and Live105! Yippee!… SONG TO HEAR: Japandroids’ “The House That Heaven Built”…Hello, it’s me: [email protected]
