In a sign of the times, there’s a new category this year: Best Electronic Dance Music Video.

RIHANNA, DRAKE, KATY LEAD MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS NOMINEES

EDM, Neo-Boy Bands Will Also Be Well Represented on the Sept. 6 Telecast
MTV has announced the nominees for the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards, and leading the field are Rihanna and Drake, with five nods apiece, including Video of the Year. Rihanna’s nominated clip is for “We Found Love,” but she also shares a nomination with Drake for their joint smash “Take Care.” Also up for the top prize are Katy Perry's "Wide Awake," Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know" and M.I.A.'s "Bad Girls." Perry has four noms.

The Best New Artist nominees are Frank Ocean for "Swim Good," Fun. for "We Are Young," Carly Rae Jepsen for "Call Me Maybe," The Wanted for "Glad You Came" and 1D for "What Makes You Beautiful."

And in a sign of the times, there’s a new category this year: Best Electronic Dance Music Video.

Alicia Keys and One Direction were named as the first two acts to perform on the show. Said Keys, who will perform a song from her upcoming RCA album, "Debuting a new song at the VMAs is definitely special. I debuted ‘No One’ at the VMAs— it was the first time anyone in the world heard ‘No One,’ says Keys. “It’s the perfect setting. It’s the right energy. It’s the right vibe. People are so excited about the night of music and hearing different styles that it just goes over really well. I can’t wait!”

Beginning Tuesday, July 31, at 6:00 a.m. ET, viewers can vote for general VMA categories, including Video of the Year and Best New Artist, and more by going to vma.mtv.com online or m.mtv.com on their mobile phones. Best New Artist is also available for voting via all wireless carrier subscribers by texting BNA to 22444 or by visiting MTV’s official Facebook page. voters that text VMA to 22444 are automatically entered into a sweepstakes to win a trip to next year’s VMAs.

Voting for Best New Artist will continue through the show, while the voting for all other categories ends on Aug. 24 at 6:00 p.m. ET. Verizon subscribers can vote on all categories via SMS by texting VMA to 22444.

The VMAs will be telecast on Sept. 6 from the Staples Center.
