JAY Z BRINGING MADE IN
AMERICA TO L.A.

With Mayor's Help, Rapper to Bring Labor Day Fest Out West; Beyoncé Stadium Tour Rumored

Jay Z doesn’t have to fight City Hall after all. Probably.

The rapper-entrepreneur-mogul is bringing the Budweiser Made in America Festival to L.A. on 8/30-31, he announced today at City Hall. He was accompanied by Mayor Eric Garcetti, Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino, Budweiser VP Brian Perkins and other mucky-mucks. A lineup has yet to be made public.

Still controversy remains, as opponents on the L.A. City Council have yet to issue permits and continue to express reservations about its impact.

The West Coast venue is downtown's Grand Park, an expanse near City Hall and the famed Music Center complex that's owned by the County and managed by the Music Center.

Pre-sales began today, with tickets for both days (each of which will likely have a different lineup, per festival tradition) going for $125; proceeds from the event will benefit the United Way.

The announcement follows widespread rumors that Jay and Beyoncé will embark on a 20-city stadium tour together this summer.

Made in America’s Labor Day weekend confab, which went down the last two times in Philadelphia and last year saw J-Hova joined by Beyoncé, Rick Ross, Skrillex, Nine Inch Nails and Passion Pit, will simultaneously happen in both Philly and L.A.

It should attract some 50k concertgoers, which will likely be a boon for local business—but has also ignited a fair bit of controversy.

While recently elected Mayor Garcetti has been burnishing his image as a forward-looking (and decidedly hip) leader by championing events like this one, other players on the political scene have objected loudly.

Key among these is Councilman Jose Huizar, who attempted to block the fest on the grounds that a large paid event in the middle of downtown, replete with liquor service and street closures, would be seriously disruptive.

Huizar moved to withhold permits, but the combination of Jay Z’s star power, Garcetti’s persuasion and Huizar’s own troubles (he’s been hobbled by a sexual-harassment scandal) put most of the momentum on the other side. Still, Huizar's rep today announced that fiscal and safety concerns would need to be addressed before permits were issued. Stay tuned.
