You Haven’t Heard the Last of “Somebody That I Used to Know”—Not by a Long Shot
Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” is getting more ubiquitous by the day.
A "Somebody That I Used to Know" remix set will be available as a 10-track bundle at the iTunes Store on June 8. Among those who offer their variations on the smash are Tiesto, the Beastie Boys’ Adrock, Bibio, Dan Aux and Gang Colours. An unauthorized remix collection is already out there, by the way.
Gotye's stateside breakthrough has also occasioned the first U.S. release of his 2006 album Like Drawing Blood, hitting next month on Fairfax/Universal Republic. The album that put Gotye on the map in his homeland, Like Drawing Blood became the ultimate indie word-of-mouth project, eventually going platinum without ever making the Top 40. It earned Gotye an Aria award and went on to top numerous critics’ polls in Europe before being named iTunes Album of the Year for 2008 in the U.K. The album features his cult classic "Hearts a Mess," which spawned a memorable video of its own; watch it here.
Meanwhile, “Somebody” is receiving an average of 1.5 million tags a week worldwide on Shazam, a trend that is likely continue throughout the summer. The app’s Tag Charts are another handy measure of a record’s mainstream penetration—although we find it hard to believe that so many people still need Shazam to figure out they’re listening to what’s shaping up as this year’s “Rolling in the Deep.” Another prospective Grammy nominee that’s trending upward on Shazam is “Hold On” by Alabama Shakes.
