“Our artists and the entire Capitol team are fortunate to have Greg as a leader in our company, and I congratulate him on this well-deserved promotion.”
——Steve Barnett

IT’S THOMPSON TIME AT CMG

Well-Liked, Highly Regarded Veteran Will Be Barnett’s Right-Hand Man
We’ve been telling you for months that Greg Thompson would have a big part in Steve Barnett’s plans for the Capitol Music Group, the U.S. centerpiece of the new EMI, so this morning’s announcement is no surprise. It does, however, provide some details about the specifics of Thompson’s job, along with the requisite quotes from the principals.

Thompson has been named Executive Vice President of CMG, making him a senior member of Barnett’s executive team, overseeing sales, promotion, marketing, publicity, creative services & video production, digital planning & production, strategic research and insight, as well as shepherding the company’s brand partnerships through its in-house agency. He’s relocated from New York to L.A. and id based in the Capitol Tower—which, as in previous press releases from CMG, is accurately described as “iconic.”

“I was highly aware of Greg’s accomplishments and stellar reputation within the industry before I came to Capitol, knowing he was instrumental in the success of Katy Perry, Lady Antebellum, Coldplay and David Guetta, among others,” Barnett confirmed. “I realized very quickly that Greg would be a key member of my senior team as we build the new Capitol Music Group, and I couldn’t be happier and more grateful that he and his family have made the big move to the West Coast. Our artists and the entire Capitol team are fortunate to have Greg as a leader in our company, and I congratulate him on this well-deserved promotion.”

Said Thompson: “Lucian Grainge clearly had a vision for Capitol’s future, as he hired one of the best music men in the business to lead the rebuilding of this historic label. I am amazed at how Steve’s energy and vision have already begun to reinvigorate Capitol and transform it into a forward thinking, aggressive company that is positioned for huge success. I am honored to be part of Steve’s team and am thrilled to be working with him and everyone here to support our artists and make Capitol the talk of the industry.”

Thompson defied the odds during the last half decade, somehow keeping EMI competitive through an extremely difficult and highly uncertain stretch as EVP Marketing and Promotion for the company. He joined EMI in 2008 after three years as EVP Promotion for IDJ. His career path, which began at Chrysalis Records in 1985, soon after his graduation from Michigan State, led to a stint at SBK and 11 years at Elektra, where he rose to EVP/GM. There’s no truth to the rumor that he was the first promo dude to begin every sentence with “Hey, buddy.”
