WOMEN RULE IN COUNTRY CRITICS' POLL
1/25/17

According to the 89 critics who voted in the Nashville Scene’s just-published 17th annual Country Music Critics’ Poll, 2016 was a banner year for female artists, who occupy seven of the Top 10 album slots (including groups fronted by women) and the same number in the singles voting.

Miranda Lambert scored a grand slam, as her devastatingly personal double album The Weight of These Wings (Vanner/RCA Nashville) was voted Album of the Year and “Vice” got Single of the Year (“Vice”), while she was named both Female Vocalist and Artist of the Year.

With these victories, Lambert holds records in the poll for the most Female Vocalist of the Year awards with six, as well as the most Single and Album of the Year awards, with four apiece (including one with The Pistol Annies). It’s also her fourth Artist of the Year nod, tying her with the Dixie Chicks for the most awards in that category.

Maren Morris and Margo Price finished first and second in the Best New Artist voting, while Price’s Midwest Farmer’s Daughter (Third Man) was #2 in the Album of the Year polling and Morris’ Hero (Columbia Nashville) was #5.

Brandy Clark hit the trifecta (#3 Best Album, #3 Best Female Vocalist and #2 Best Songwriter), Lori McKenna won Best Songwriter and The Trio (Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt) was named Best Reissue.

Pacing the male field was Sturgill Simpson (#4 Best Album, #1 Best Male Vocalist, #1 Best Live Act, #2 Artist of the Year), while Brothers Osborne was named Best Duo or Group, with Pawn Shop (EMI Nashville) finishing #11 and spawning a pair of singles that made the Top 25.
