As we head into August, it’s time to start thinking about school starting up again, and wrapping up summer. Vacations are coming to an end, and no more half-day Fridays or sneaking out for a round of golf. In looking back, this was most definitely Drake’s summer. He has another #1 this week with “Controlla” (YMCMB), and “Too Good” f/Rihanna is already Top 25 and impacting this week. He is featured on three other tracks, and is talking about another mixtape, which I think is a safe bet to say will have even more fire.
Republic’s Gary Spangler, Davey Dee and Stef Cole have had quite a busy summer, and it is showing no signs of slowing down. Marc E. Bassy f/ G-Eazy’s “You & Me” (BPG) is just now hitting its stride, moving to #14 and gaining 330 spins. Ariana Grande’s “Into You” climbs 27-22, up 230 spins, and Nick Jonas f/Ty Dolla $ign’s “Bacon” (Island) is at #37. Kungs & Cookin’ on Three Burners’ “This Girl” (Sound of Barclay/Casablanca) is one of the bigger buzz records out there, and just misses charting. It was up 220 spins, and new stations continue to climb on board. Belly f/Kehlani’s “You” (Roc Nation) had an increase of 160 spins, which lands him at #51.
Epic’s Sujit Kundu has DJ Khaled’s new LP Major Keys (We The Best) sitting on top of the chart, with three current singles out at Urban and Rhythm. “For Free” f/Drake (YMCMB/Republic) is at #3, up 375 spins. It is making a strong push to be the next #1 record. “I Got The Keys” f/Jay Z sits at #19, and the just-released “Do You Mind” f/ Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown, August Alsina, Jeremih, Future and Rick Ross comes in at #77 after two days, up 120 spins. Sujit also takes Fifth Harmony’s “All In My Head (Flex)” (SYCO) Top 10, adding an additional 210 spins. Young Thug & Travis Scott f/Quavo’s “Pick Up The Phone” is at #39, and Jidenna “Little Bit More” lands at #58, up 75 spins.
Columbia’s Ayelet Schiffman and James White have Calvin Harris f/Rihanna’s “This Is What You Came For” officially inside the Top 5. It is at #4, after an increase of 190 spins. They also drop a new Chainsmokers, this time featuring Halsey, titled “Closer” (Disruptor). It got 70 spins, and will make a push to get on the chart in a few short weeks. They are coming off a Top 5 record at the format. Aye and James are also impacting Beyonce’s “Hold Up” in a week.
RCA’s Inca and Lori G have Usher f/Young Thug’s “No Limit” at #11, gaining 170 spins. They also have Sia’s “Cheap Thrills” (Monkey Puzzle) at #15, up a very healthy 420 spins. This is on its way to top 10. Bryson Tiller’s “Sorry Not Sorry” debuts at #38, gaining 150 spins. Kid Ink f/Jeremih’s “Nasty” lands at #34, gaining 60 spins. Ayo Jay’s “Your Number” is at #70, and they are impacting Tinashe’s “Superlove” this week. It is already at #72, and had 85 new spins.
Rick Sackheim, Noah Sheer, and Scott Maness at Def Jam have YG f/Drake “Why You Always Hatin’” moving #21-18, tacking on 120 spins, and Kanye West’s “Father Stretch My Hands” (G.O.O.D./Roc-a-Fella)at #20, which sees an additional 190 spins this week. They also own the highest debut this week in Major Lazer f/Justin Bieber & MO’s “Cold Water”(Mad Decent), which comes in at #29. It was up 735 spins, and is still gaining momentum. Logic’s “Flexicution” continues to grow, as it moves #61-49. It was up 130 spins.
