CROSSOVER
THE BALLSTREET JOURNAL

I made my way out to the West Coast this past weekend to work out of the HITS offices and chat with a number of radio folks, who are all out here for the iHeartRadio meetings. Virtually every label came out in force to give a presentation of their new and upcoming music. Immediately afterwards, I popped up to Sacramento with Ayelet Shiffman, Noah Sheer and Lee L’Heureux to see KSFM PD Byron Kennedy, APD Short-e and KHHM PD Tosh. Then, newly minted RECORDS Head of Promo John Strazza and myself went straight to the Super Bowl! Tough life, I know…

Over at Republic, Drake & Future’s “Jumpman” (YMCMB/A1/Epic) holds on to #1 by just seven spins this week. The Weeknd is coming up quickly behind them, sitting at #3 and up 300 spins with “In the Night” (XO). Gary Spangler, Davey Dee and Stef Cole also have Belly f/The Weeknd’s “Might Not” shooting #28-22 and gaining 345 spins. They debuted Mike Posner’s buzzy “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” (Island) at #40, after gaining 195 spins. Taylor Swift’s “Out of the Woods” (Big Machine) posts a 150-spin increase, which lands her at #45 on the chart. Drake dropped “Summer Sixteen” late last week, and it immediately shot to #1 at iTunes. No word on whether this is the first official single, but it’s already getting some love from the major markets. Meanwhile, they’re also impacting Post Malone’s “Too Young” this week.

Columbia’s Ayelet Schiffman and James White continue to grow The Chainsmokers f/Rozes’ “Roses” (Disruptor). It increases 305 spins and moves up to #13. The research at most stations has really been strong, along with the song’s single sales. The Internet’s funky ballad, “Girl” (Odd Future), just misses debuting at #41. It was up 195 spins, and is sure to debut high this coming week. Adele’s “When We Were Young” (XL) is building nicely, as it sees a 140-spin bump and rockets #102-54. The sales are still massive on both the LP and single. J. Cole’s “Love Yourz” (Roc Nation) impacts next week.

Def Jam’s Rick Sackheim, Noah Sheer and Scott Maness dropped a Rihanna bombshell on us Thursday morning and by the time the chart printed Saturday, it was already at #24! “Work” f/Drake (Westbury Road/Roc Nation) was up over 1200 spins in just under three days. Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself” (RBMG) leaps into the Top 10 this week, gaining over 700 spins. Jeremih’s “Oui” moves to #18, thanks to an increase of 210 spins. Fabolous f/Nicki Minaj’s “Doin’ It Well” is at #34, up 60 spins. DJ Mustard f/Travi$ Scott’s “Whole Lotta Lovin” (Roc Nation) climbs to #47. With another increase of 110 spins, it’s positioned to debut next week. They’re impacting Alessia Cara’s “Wild Things” this week. She’s coming off a giant #1 record and this is another solid song from her.

Capitol’s Dixie Tipton has Tori Kelly’s “Hollow” to #28, up 40 spins. And she’s impacting OG Maco’s “Do What It Do” (QC/Motown) this coming week… Sujit Kundu and Epic lift Yo Gotti’s “Down in the DM” (CMG) 370 spins to put it Top 10 this week—next on the radar is Top 5. Puff Daddy & The Family’s “You Could Be My Lover” (Bad Boy) moves to #48 on the chart, and Mack Wilds’ “Love in the 90z” is up 60 spins, taking it to #56.

Team RCA has the full court press on ZAYN’s “Pillowtalk.” For those of you who’ve been under a rock the last few years, ZAYN was a member of super group One Direction. He strikes out on his own with a sexy Top40/Rhythm track that’s currently the #2 selling song on iTunes and building quite the buzz. Inca and Lori G also have G-Eazy f/Bebe Rexha’s “Me Myself & I” tearing up the charts as it shoots up 665 spins to land at #8; all signs point to it being a smash. Bryson Tiller’s “Don’t” sits at #11, up 250 spins. Chris Brown’s “Back to Sleep” moves into the Top 15, thanks to an increase of 330 spins, and R. City f/Chloe Angelides’ “Make Up” (Kemosabe) debuts at #39 this week.
