THE BALLSTREET JOURNAL

We are in the midst of the summer doldrums, as we’ve been somewhat lacking huge releases over the last few weeks. That said, it provides a great opportunity for the ‘work’ records to get a fair shot to grow and develop. That’s not to disrespect any current records, but as we all know, there are one-listen records and ones that need to grow and develop in order to move up in categories with stations.

This all ties into Taylor Swift f/Kendrick Lamar’s “Bad Blood” (Big Machine). Republic’s Gary Spangler, Davey Dee and Stef Cole have had a string of Top 25 records with her. They were looking to break through with her at the Rhythm format, and they did just that. This week, they take “Bad Blood” Top 10, her first at this format. It was obviously a ‘one-listen’ record on the Pop side, as it went to #1 in about five weeks, but for her to go Top 10 here really shows how much her audience and overall reach has grown. They also have the biggest record on the planet with The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face” (XO). It earned over 1k spins yet again, and leaped #7-3. It could be the new #1 record this coming week. Sage The Gemini f/Nick Jonas’ “Good Thing” climbs to #14, gaining 180 spins, and Natalie La Rose f/Fetty Wap’s “Around the World” (IMG) has a great week, adding 500 spins and sliding #28-23. Be sure to keep a close eye on Demi Lovato’s “Cool for the Summer” (Safehouse/Island/Hollywood). It was Most Increased at Pop this week and was up 130 spins here.

Ayelet Schiffman and James White at Columbia also have a record enjoying massive multi-format success. OMI’s “Cheerleader” (Ultra) is #3 at Pop, up over 2k spins. Here at Rhythm, it moves #9-7, adding an additional 500 spins. Make sure you check out the new remix, which features Kid Ink. Samantha J’s “League of My Own” tacks on 165 new spins this week and continues to develop. There’s a direct correlation between real airplay and Shazam numbers with this. Next up for them is Dej Loaf f/Big Sean’s “Back Up,” as well as Juicy J f/Wiz Khalifa’s “For Everybody.”

At Def Jam, Rick Sackhiem, Noah Sheer and Scott Maness take Big Sean’s “One Man Can Change the World” (G.O.O.D.) #31-27, up 225 spins. This one’s had steady growth each week and is approaching Top 25. Jeremih f/J. Cole’s “Planes” also had a bit of a breakthrough week. It was up 260 spins, the most it’s been up to at this point, and surges #38-33 this week. Elijah Blake’s “I Just Wanna..” is at #57 this week. And make yourself familiar with Alessia Cara’s “Here.” It’s just getting started at Pop, but will soon cross over to our format.

Chris Brown, Strazza, Pitbull

RCA’s John Strazza, Inca and Lori G have Kid Ink f/Dej Loaf’s “Be Real” at #6 this week, with an increase of 225 spins. Pitbull f/Chris Brown’s “Fun” (Mr.305/Polo Grounds) is at #16, with a 110 spin increase. Mark Ronson f/Mystikal’s “Feel Right” just missed the chart this week, and Miguel’s “Coffee” is at #45. Prince Royce f/Pitbull and Jennifer Lopez’s “Back It Up” moves to #53. Also, Chris Brown has a new track, “Liquor”; it’s going for airplay immediately.

Epic’s Sujit Kundu enjoys another week in the catbird seat, as Jidenna’s “Classic Man” (Wondaland) holds at #1. It was up 370 spins. Fifth Harmony f/Kid Ink’s “Worth It” (SYCO) moves to #20, gaining 120 spins, and Janelle Monae & Jidenna’s “Yoga” (Wondaland) is at #44, up 40 spins. Casey Veggies f/Dej Loaf’s “Tied Up” is at #50, after increasing 70 spins this week, and Ciara’s “Dance Like We’re Making Love” climbs to #70.

Lee L’Heureux and Warner Bros. move Jason Derulo’s “Cheyenne” (Beluga Heights) #34-30 this week and tack on 310 spins. Lee also just released a new Nico & Vinz track, “That’s How You Know,” which features Kid Ink. That will be impacting in a few short weeks.
