I hope everyone had a relaxing and safe holiday weekend. There’s nothing like a 3 1/2 day weekend... until you get back to the office to find you have a ridiculous amount of emails to respond to, as well as all of last Friday’s crap. This week’s chart is a bit skewed, as it was a big mix show weekend for a number of stations. You’ll see that a few records regained their bullet, while some records were down a bit. It should even out as the week goes on.
At least Sujit Kundu and Epic are coming back smiling, as they take Jidenna’s “Classic Man” (Wondaland) to #1 this week; it was up 550 spins, and leaped #4-1. This is Epic’s first #1 Rhythm record since 2012! It’s never an easy task to take a brand new artist and his single to the top, so congrats to Epic. They also have Fifth Harmony f/Kid Ink’s “Worth It” (SYCO) at #22, gaining 70 spins. Tink’s “Million” sits at #40 this week, adding 25 spins, and Janelle Monae & Jidenna’s “Yoga” (Wondaland) climbs to #43. Casey Veggies f/Dej Loaf’s “Tied Up” has a solid week, as it gains 95 spins. Carnage f/I LOVE MAKONNEN’s “I Like Tuh” is buzzing, and moves to #67 on the chart, while Ciara’s “Dance Like We’re Making Love” is just getting started, gaining 70 spins this week.
RCA’s John Strazza, Inca and Lori G. continue to grow Kid Ink f/Dej Loaf’s “Be Real”; it jumps #8-6 this week, up 270 spins. Pitbull f/Chris Brown’s “Fun” (Mr.305/Polo Grounds) also has a very impressive week, moving #19-16 and adding an additional 125 spins. Mark Ronson f/Mystikal’s “Feel Right” just misses the chart at #41, and Miguel’s “Coffee” sits at #44. Deorro X Chris Brown’s “Five More Hours” slides to #45. They’re impacting R. City f/Adam Levine’s “Locked Away” this week.
Ayelet Schiffman and James White at Columbia have OMI’s “Cheerleader” (Ultra) rocketing to the top; it’s at #9 this week, up 560 spins. Samantha J’s “League of My Own” takes a very impressive leap as well, moving #39-32 and gaining 190 spins. This record is raising its hand, and stations are taking note. Dej Loaf has a new track, “Back Up” f/Big Sean, which will impact in a few short weeks.
Republic’s Gary Spangler, Davey Dee and Stef Cole own the hottest record out there with The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face” (XO). It shoots #12-7 this week, up 960 spins. This is quickly becoming the mass appeal, multi-format hit we all expected. They also have Taylor Swift f/Kendrick Lamar’s “Bad Blood” (Big Machine) at #12, adding 245 spins. The immediate goal is Top 10, which would be her first at the Rhythm format. Sage The Gemini f/Nick Jonas’ “Good Thing” leaps #20-15 with an increase of 315 spins. Natalie La Rose f/Fetty Wap’s “Around the World” moves to #28 with a gain of 470 spins, and Tove Lo’s “Talking Body” (Island) sits at #33.
Def Jam’s Rick Sackhiem, Noah Sheer and Scott Maness have Big Sean’s “One Man Can Change the World” (G.O.O.D.) at #31 this week, up 240 spins. And after over four months, they debut Jeremih f/J. Cole’s “Planes,” which had an increase of 90 spins, at #38 this week. Elijah Blake’s “I Just Wanna..” continues to develop and tacks on 75 spins, as it climbs to #60. The label is very excited about Alessia Cara’s “Here,” a multi-format buzz record that’ll be impacting Rhythm in late July.
Lee L’Heureux and Warner Bros. debut Jason Derulo’s “Cheyenne” (Beluga Heights) this week; it comes in at #34 and was up 250 spins. I’m hearing that Macklemore will have some new music in the next month or so as well.
Meanwhile, Janet Jackson’s “No Sleeep” is off to a solid start, as it’s on the chart at Urban AC and is set to debut at Urban next week.
