It’s a shortened work week, as the country celebrates Independence Day. Fireworks, cookouts and plenty of good ole American beers. Sticking with the ‘independent’ theme, congrats are in order for Paula Tuggey, who took Tech N9ne f/B.o.B’s “Hood Go Crazy” Top 10 this week. She did all of the heavy lifting for this track and did a bang-up job. Paula now takes on the chore of reintroducing Janet Jackson to Rhythm radio. It’s been a number of years since she’s had a track on the chart, but “No Sleeep” harkens back to her classic style. Make sure to check it out.


Another record that reaches the Top 10 this week is OMI’s “Cheerleader.” Columbia’s Ayelet Schiffman and James White stuck to their game plan – the #1 at iTunes and Shazam numbers certainly didn’t hurt either – and now Top 5 is in their sights. J. Cole’s “Wet Dreamz” (Roc Nation) is at #16, and Samantha J’s “League of My Own” debuts at #39 this week, gaining 100 spins. The latter is starting to Shazam in major markets and surrounding markets where it’s getting real airplay.

Republic’s Gary Spangler, Davey Dee and Stef Cole are on cruise control with The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face” (XO); it was up another 875 spins, and shoots #17-12. Right behind it is Miss Everything, Taylor Swift, with “Bad Blood” f/Kendrick Lamar. It was up 270 spins, and the label is laser focused on getting the first Top 10 Rhythm track of her career. Sage The Gemini f/Nick Jonas’ “Good Thing” is at #20, and gained 240 spins. Natalie La Rose f/Fetty Wap’s “Around the World” leaps #38-30, adding an additional 280 spins.

The three-headed monster that is Def Jam promotion has some big things in the works. Big Sean’s “One Man Can Change the World” (G.O.O.D.) moves #35-31, tacking on 150 spins, and Jeremih f/J. Cole’s “Planes” just misses the chart at #41, adding 80 spins. Elijah Blake’s “I Just Wanna..” continues to develop each week. They have a new artist, Alessia Cara, and I absolutely love her new single “Here”. I think it’ll be a multi-format success; there’s a buzz starting at both Pop and Rhythm, and it should spread from there.


RCA’s John Strazza, Inca and Lori G continue to grow Kid Ink f/Dej Loaf’s “Be Real”; it slides to #8, up 225 spins. Pitbull f/Chris Brown’s “Fun” (Mr.305/Polo Grounds) holds at #19 and sees an increase in triple-digits. Mark Ronson f/Mystikal’s “Feel Right” is at #43, Miguel’s “Coffee” sits at #44 and Deorro X Chris Brown’s “5 More Hours” is at #48. The chart is fairly tight at the bottom, but these records are looking to cut through and debut next week.

Epic’s Sujit Kundu is looking to take Jidenna’s “Classic Man” (Wondaland) to #1; it moves to #4 this week, adding another 480 spins. The three records ahead of it are all down, so it has a definite possibility of hitting the top over the next two weeks. He also has Fifth Harmony f/Kid Ink’s “Worth It” (SYCO) at #21. The hard work pays off with Tink’s “Million,” as they debut it this week at #40. And the team impacts Ciara’s “Dance Like We’re Making Love” this week.

Lee L’Heureux and Warner Bros. officially impact Jason Derulo’s “Cheyenne” (Beluga Heights) this week. Based on his track record, the track will be no less than a sub power for you and sales will be in the Top 5 in your market.
