THE SOUNDS OF BLACK FRIDAY
10/19/17

Black Friday, the day you awaken from a carb- and Zinfandel-stoked overdose, is again a celebration of the vinyl record courtesy of the folks who deliver Record Store Day in April.

Offerings at this year’s event, set for 11/24—the birthdate of Lee Michaels, Pete Best and Scott Joplin—include limited releases from Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, Big Star’s Chris Bell and two Paul McCartney Christmas singles.

Sony’s Legacy Recordings is releasing Janis Joplin's Greatest Hits on colored vinyl; a four LP set of Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds Live At Luther College; rapper Prodigy’sKeep It Thoro” on a 12" picture disc; and a Preservation Hall Jazz Band live album, Run Stop & Drop!! (The Needle).

Rhino is preparing 12 limited edition releases. The LPs are Dimebag Darrell’s The Hitz (limited to 6,000 copies); The DoorsAbsolutely Live (2-LP, 12,000 copies on midnight blue vinyl); Grateful Dead Records Collection (5-LP boxed set, 7,500 copies); The Notorious B.I.G.’s Hypnotize (9,000 copies on black and orange mixed vinyl); 50th anniversary edition of Otis Redding’s Live In Europe (6,000 copies on 140-gram red vinyl); the 40th anniversary Deluxe Edition of Richard Hell and The Voidoids’ Blank Generation (2-LP limited edition of 4,500 copies); Son Volt’s Straightaways (4,500 copies); Twisted Sister’s A Twisted Christmas (4,200 copies on green vinyl); and Tori Amos Y Kant Tori Read (6,500 copies on orange vinyl).

They also have a 7-inch of Aretha Franklin with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra doing “Respect” and “Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do).”

Omnivore is releasing the six-LP The Complete Chris Bell featuring the complete recordings of the Big Star co-founder, and the three-LP The RaspberriesPop Art Live on red, blue, and yellow vinyl.

McCartney has two 7-inch releases. The A side is a new version of "Wonderful Christmastime” recorded with The Roots. The green vinyl features The Decemberists’ rendition of “Jesus Christ” on the flip and the red vinyl is backed by a live Norah Jones performance of “Peace on Earth.”

LPs from Gorillaz, Sonny Rollins, Tangerine Dream and Sun Ra are also on the slate of releases, which can be found here. Participating stores are listed here.
