Meghan Trainor, Title (Epic): Proving herself more than a one-(“Bass”)-hit wonder, Meghan Trainor made the transition from songwriter to pop star with a diverse collection of material that marries the hit parade of her grandparents' teen years with modern pop and hip-hip energy. Beyond the massive success of “All About that Bass,” the 21-year-old Massachusetts-reared, Nashville-based musician reeled off three more hits on her major label debut—“Lips are Movin',” “Dear Future Husband,” “Like I'm Gonna Lose You” with John Legend—as she cleverly covered body image issues, sexual hookups (drunken and otherwise) and romantic doubt. Title is a playful and diverse effort, revealing a fearlessness in marrying eclectic styles – rhythms from hip-hop, Phil Spector's Wall of Sound and the Caribbean, melodies that evoke Bronx street corners of the '50s and Patsy Cline dreaminess – and making them stand out with a fragile yet assertive voice and quirky instrumentation (ukelele, bass, baritone sax, harp). A Pop Vocal consideration seems to be a starting point, though Album of the Year should not be out of the question.
