While Columbia star Mark Ronson tops the biggest songs of 2015 list in Blighty with Bruno Mars smash “Uptown Funk!” notching up 1.76 million combined sales over the last 12 months (2.25m in total), it’s David Joseph’s Universal U.K. that claims the most mentions in the Top 10. Thanks to a mix of U.K. stars and a certain U.S. name, Lucian Grainge’s marketplace dominance continues in his home country.
The award for the longest burner goes to Darcus Beese’ Island for Hozier’s “Take Me to Church.” The track sits at #3 in the Official Charts year-end singles list, with 1.25m combined sales in 2015 despite being released toward the tail end of 2013.
Alongside managers Jamie Lillywhite and Cassandra Gracey, Polydor boss Ferdy Unger-Hamilton pulled out all the stops to drum up hype for Ellie Goulding ahead of her third album, Delirium, and the first move hit the sweet spot. “Love Me Like You Do” was released in January for the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack, and after hitting #1 on the U.K. Official Singles Chart, closed the year with 1.19m and at #4 on this list.
Troubadour James Bay, looked after by Ted Cockle’s Virgin EMI, is at #8 with November 2014 track “Hold Back the River,” and comeback king Justin Bieber rounds off the Top 10. Def Jam’s Bieber claimed the first #1 single of 2016 in Blighty last week with “Love Yourself” and his “What Do You Mean” and “Sorry” were amongst the most popular songs in the U.K. last year at #9 and #10 respectively.
Warner appears once in the Top 10 at #5, with Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” f/Charlie Puth selling 1.17m by year end. And XL superstar Adele took just two months to feature at #6 with “Hello”—the fastest-selling single of the year. The complete list with release dates is as follows:
