I recently found a new obsession in Banners' "Shine a Light" (embedded below), which was released via Island mid-September. The track sounds like a total Alternative smash to me, and its undeniably anthemic quality reminds me of the first time I heard Bastille's now multi-platinum hit "Pompeii."

Liverpool-bred Mike Nelson, who performs under the moniker with a backing band, filled industry hot spot Community on Fairfax last night for an intimate and brief showcase, and they managed to get the whole room moving, which is truly atypical for the pretentious L.A. crowd. They may have had a little help from my Hendrick's martinis, though.

Gin aside, the single's balance of playfulness, force and sentiment commands foot tapping, head nodding and in-chair wiggling when attempting to create a compelling soundtrack for your less-than-compelling time spent at the office.

“It’s about waiting for that one big wave to finally pull you under while clinging on to that one last ray of hope," Nelson told blog Consequence of Sound in August. "It’s a song to the person in your life that offers salvation while the storm is raging around you.” And it sounds just as he describes it: turbulent and steadying.

The project is ripe; Nelson—who dropped his debut track, "Ghosts," in March under the name RAINES—inked his current label deal a few months ago, just became present on social media this January and only has the two mentioned songs available for purchase. That being said, I expect great things.

Keep your ears glued to Alternative radio, as "Shine a Light" races upwards and prepares to chart; it went #60-54 this week.

xx,
Samantha Hissong
