August 12, 2010

IVANA: so did you miss me on my birthday?
LENNY: when was your birthday this year?
IVANA: as with the 48 previous birthdays, it was on august 5
LENNY: you’re still younger than springtime.
IVANA:  this year i spent it at madison square garden with 12,000 of my closest friends
LENNY:  to see who?
IVANA:  for the second night of arcade fire and spoon (aka your favorite utensil)
LENNY:  their next album could be called Soup..anyway, arcade fire is on fire, huge sales... is radio gonna play this one?
IVANA: Yes, radio is definitely ready for Arcade Fire. Lots of love already from a dozen-plus major markets and HUGE adds this week from WRFF Philly, KSJO San Jose, WRZX Indianapolis, 91X San Diego, WZNE Rochester and 99X Atlanta. Already #34 on the chart too. I'm hoping, like Radiohead, that the sales will be too big for radio to ignore. In fact, I KNOW that the first week sales are going to blow people’s minds!
LENNY:  now we're talking..... there appears to be a swing in the consumer zeitgeist and alt radio seems to be evolving
IVANA: as Lenny Diana, the PD at WRZX said, "you can't ignore progress."
LENNY: it's true.... reality is a hard thing to ignore
IVANA: there are still plenty of programmers who are unwilling to accept that bands like Arcade Fire, Mumford & Sons, Phoenix, Black Keys, etc. are the ones selling out arena, NOT the faceless rock bands they continue to play

LENNY:  bands like Phoenix, Mumford, Broken Bells, Yeasayer are taking the spotlight from the harder rockers
IVANA: with all due respect to Soundgarden, whose early records I worked and loved, Arcade Fire outdrew them 2-1 at Lollapalooza
LENNY: Florence and the Machine, it appears, will also be joining the list of hot act,and Interpol, who were on the front end of the evolution, also has a great new record in the marketplace
IVANA: Florence and the Machine’s song "Dog Days of Summer," which is being used in the ads for Eat, Pray. Love, will break even bigger than MIA's "Paper Planes," which was also used in a movie campaign. I love Interpol’s "Barricade" and I know that radio will be back on board in a big way. and Weezer have a new single, "Memories," on Epitaph!
LENNY: Weezer on Epitaph?  What's the story there?
IVANA: They're off Interscope and their new CD Hurley is on Epitaph
LENNY: hmmmm, interesting
IVANA: the single is also the theme of Jackass: 3-D, and the Jackass guys also recorded a version of the song that will be in the movie
LENNY: ah, the lowest of all common denominators
IVANA: hardly. Jackass is high art
LENNY: correct, one needs to be really high
IVANA: ANYWAY, I think the Florence & the Machine song is MAGIC, and it will be awesome to see Weezer have a #1 song on Epitaph.did i tell you I'm going to Boulder this week to hang out with the Triple A world?
LENNY: that sounds all good.yes, i heard.... Alpha Rev is going to play there, that should be way fun
IVANA: the big tipping point, besides the chance to see my beloved Alpha Rev and shop at my favorite store (Max), is that I can also see Guster, Edward Sharpe and One Eskimo!
LENNY: sounds great.... i'll be waiting for the reports.... i gotta run now
IVANA: say goodnight, gracie
LENNY: Goodnight, gracie
