One of the most interesting, talented and envelope-pushing record guys I ever met was Bob Krasnow, aka Ernie or Bilko (nicknames given to Kras by Warner’s Lenny Waronker because of his resemblance to Phil Silvers, who played Master Sergeant Ernest G. Bilko in the hit ’50s sitcom The Phil Silvers Show).
The surprise release of The Stage, Avenged Sevenfold’s seventh album and first for Capitol, was celebrated in sci-fi style Thursday night. If the new album performs anywhere near as well as its predecessor, it could debut at #1 next week. It's the first-ever unannounced release with a physical component.
The marquee read "JOANNE TONIGHT," and the scores of fans lined up on Silverlake Blvd. knew just what that meant. On the final stop of her Bud Light-sponsored Dive Bar Tour—and with Joanne about to land at #1 our SPS and Album charts, Interscope's Lady Gaga took the stage of rock club The Satellite in L.A.'s hipster-infested Silver Lake neighborhood last night (10/27)…
The latest edition of our Top 50 Streaming Songs Chart, powered by BuzzAngle Music, is live, and we have a new #1: The Weeknd’s “Starboy,” which unseats The Chainsmokers’ “Closer” after what seems like an eternity. Top 50 marketshare: UMG 44%, Sony Music 26%, WMG 20%
This week’s batch of buzzing people, places and things includes a king in waiting, a still-vital music-TV pioneer, the reigning champs of Xmas music, a Nashville equestrian in full gallop, a high-flying legal eagle, a brand name in steep decline, a deep-drilling data savant and a label on the move (in more ways than one)...
Country music fans are in the buying mood as four of the eight rookies in iTunes’ early morning Top 10 today come from Nashville. Kenny Chesney has the early lead among his peers on flipover Friday, but he’s sitting at #2 on the iTunes album chart.
It’s a strong week for follow-ups from budding stars on Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist. For starters, we get new singles from Virgin’s Jonas Blue (“Fast Car”), Island’s Tove Lo (“Cool Girl”) and Warner Music’s Dua Lipa (“Blow Your Mind (Mwah)”). And way down the list are Kaleo’s “Way Down We Go” recorded at Spotify’s New York studios and a new one from Virgin’s Emeli Sande, “Breathing Underwater.”
Sir Lucian Grainge joins A&M/Interscope star Sting and manager Martin Kierszenbaum on the occasion of the artist's Grammy Museum performance and interview ahead of his 11/11 album drop. Naturally, the talk turned to knighthood, as the UMG topper recounted the extraordinary experience of being honored by the Her Majesty the Queen. Later, Kierszenbaum asked if Grainge would teach him jousting.
S-Curve vocalist supreme and Tony-winning Hamilton breakout Leslie Odom, Jr. has teamed up with Sara Bareilles (herself a Tony nominee) for the song and performance video “Seriously.” The complex and powerful Bareilles-penned composition imagines President Obama’s private (and anguished) thoughts about the current election. The clip premiered this morning on an election-themed This American Life; you can check it out below.
