The Top 5 Highest-Grossing Films in America Over the Weekend

Disney's new Lion King movie just earned the biggest July opening of all time, breaking the record held by 2011's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 ($169.1m) with approximately $185m.

According to BoxOfficeMojo, the debut serves as the second-largest opening of the year so far, the seventh-largest ever and the #1 largest opening opening for a PG film.

That said, although it earned an A CinemaScore, it also ended up with a lackluster 54% at Rotten Tomatoes, thanks to a largely tepid response from critics.

1. The Lion King (Buena Vista) $185.0m 4,725/$39,153 avg. (debut)
2. Spider-Man: Far From Home (Sony) $21.0m 4,415/$4,757 avg. (week 3)
3. Toy Story 4 (Buena Vista) $14.6m 3,750/$3,893 avg. (week 5)
4. Crawl (Paramount) $6.0m 3,170/$1,893 avg. (week 2)
5. Yesterday (Universal) $5.1m 2,662/$1,916 avg. (week 4)
