BIZ VOWS TO FIGHT CLIMATE CRISIS

The British music industry has united to sign a declaration that promises to take urgent action over the environmental impact of its practices. UMG, Sony, Warner, Beggars Group are among those to have signed the pledge.

The newly formed Music Declares Emergency Group (MDE) has administered the declaration, which promises action against a “climate and ecological emergency.”

The declaration calls on governments and media institutions to tell the truth about the emergency, which has arisen from “global injustices,” and to act now to reverse biodiversity loss and reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by no later than 2030. It also acknowledges the environmental impact of music industry practices while committing to taking urgent action.

Those who have signed the declaration pledge to jointly support one another, share expertise as a collective industry and community, speak up about the climate and ecological emergency and work toward making businesses ecologically sustainable and regenerative.

Alongside those mentioned above, other signees include AIM, Radiohead, Festival Republic, Warner Chappell Music UK, SJM Concerts, Coda Agency, Suede, Domino, Wolf Alice, Abbey Road Studios, Nadine Shah, Warp, The BRIT School, IDLES and Music Venue Trust.

“It has never been more important to understand the gravity of the climate crisis and to do more,” Alison Tickell, MD of Julie’s Bicycle and a member of the MDE working group, said. “Music Declares Emergency was created to enable the U.K. music industry to declare a Climate and Ecological Emergency, to accelerate collaboration and ambition in order to meet critical targets and to call on government to use their policy and investment tools to help us to reach those goals.”
