GOING LIVE WITH POLLSTAR

A look at Pollstar's LIVE75 Chart—now in its third month of publication—suggests a considerable divide between the streaming world and the live world. Hip-hop as a genre is known for its stream-heavy success, and yet the only hip-hop act to make the Top 20 was Post Malone—#7 with 13,551 average tickets sold from five shows for an average gross of $1.2m. Other than that, Anderson .Paak was #25 and DMX is #54, while Hieroglyphics, Insane Clown Posse and Snow Tha Product appeared at #71, #72 and #75, respectively.

Impressively but unsurprisingly, the rock crowd-drawers of Metallica are in their fourth consecutive week at #1. The band earned an average of 55,116 tickets sold from four shows (at 98% average capacity) for an average gross around $5.2m.

It’s not a shock to see legacy acts like Billy Joel—at #2 with 26,071 average tickets sold from three shows for $3.3m—at the top of this chart. Something similar can be said for Eric Church—21,938 from five shows for $2.1m. Both acts, known far and wide for their live shows, were at 100% average capacity sold.

More compelling is Luke Combs’ continued presence in the Top 10. The acclaimed, young country act is having a serious moment right now, generating real mainstream success. He’s now headlining amphitheaters, moving an average of 11,384 tickets, based on three shows pulled from the last 30 days of touring.

Another country act, Cody Johnson made a big move on the LIVE75 Chart, debuting last week at #44 and rising to #26 this week. He went from an average of 1,183 tickets sold to 3,180, based on three gigs. This feat earned him the Pollstar honor of “Noise Maker”—"the Active Tour with biggest positive chart gain from previous week.” To be clear, Pollstar defines an “Active Tour” as “one where there are upcoming shows in the next 30 days in Pollstar’s Route Book database.” For perspective, Johnson recently did two nights at New Braunfels, TX’s 5.7k seater Whitewater Ampitheater and followed those up with two opening slots on the Luke Combs tour—at 15k-cap DTE Energy Music Theater and 19k-cap Merriweather Post Pavilion.

Only six solo females made the LIVE75 this week. Just two made the Top 40; P!nk was #4 with nearly 16k tickets and $2.1m gross, while Ariana Grande was #6 with 14k tickets and $1.5m gross.
