AIM AWARDS 2018: ALL THE WINNERS

Jorja Smith, Nadine Shah, Ninja Tune and Tracey Thorn were among the members of a diverse British independent music community celebrated Tuesday at the AIM Awards ceremony in London.

Smith (pictured) was named U.K. Breakthrough of the Year for her debut album, Lost & Found (FAMM). The night’s superstar performer — Nadine Shah — took home Best Album for her third release, Holiday Destination (1965 Records). She thanked her manager Ros Earls, producer Ben Hillier, and 1965 founder James Endeacott and partner Mat Schneck for prioritising art over commerce. “I wrote an album about the refugee crisis and the rise in nationalism—you can’t sync those songs in a car advert,” she said. “But my team they didn’t mind, because they genuinely believe in the music and documenting the times that we live in. I showed them the first draft of the album and they said, 'be louder, say more.'”

Dead Oceans-signed L.A. singer/songwriter Phoebe Bridgers won International Breakthrough of the Year, while U.K. rock band IDLES (Partisan), who were at #2 on this week's midweek charts with their second record, were named Hardest Working Group.

The second album from pop duo Let’s Eat Grandma, I’m All Ears (Transgressive), received the award for Best Sophomore Release, while their producer SOPHIE took home the Innovator Award. She said: “To be truly deserving of this award would necessarily not only involve changing the sound of today’s music, but also ripping apart the deeply entrenched and deeply flawed conservative patriarchal structures permeating its culture, simultaneously creating a more vibrant, diverse, meaningful and inspiring future for us now and the generations whose lives our decisions affect and help shape. Thank you for having me.”

The Outstanding Contribution to Music Award this year went to Thorn; drum ‘n’ bass legend Goldie received the Pioneer Award for Metalheadz, the trailblazing label he founded in 1994.

Dave took home the The PPL Award for Most Played New Independent Artist. Ninja Tune won Independent Label of the Year and signing Peggy Gou won Independent Track of the Year for "It Makes You Forget (Itgehane)." The fan-voted Best Live Act award went to synthpop legends Erasure.
