EMMYS SHOWER DONALD GLOVER WITH NOMS

Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, received four Emmy nominations this morning across four categories—acting, writing, directing and hosting. He’s not the only music figure up for a TV trophy. The Jimmy Iovine-Dr. Dre HBO doc, The Defiant Ones, received five nods, including Documentary of Nonfiction Series.

John Legend and Sara Bareilles were nominated for their work in NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar In Concert. Legend is up for Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie; Bareilles is up for Supporting Actress. In addition, Ricky Martin is a contender for Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.

Glover, though, has quite the unique collection of noms. For his work in Atlanta—which received 16 noms—he is up for Lead Actor, Outstanding Writing, and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series; he is also up for Outstanding Guest Actor for hosting Saturday Night Live.

SNL, which received 21 nominations including Variety Sketch Series, scored a nom for Chance the Rapper in the Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics category.

His “Come Back Barack” goes up against “In the Market for a Miracle” from Tony, Grammy and Oscar winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul’s A Christmas Story Live!; Mark Rivers for “Totally Gay” in Big Mouth; Alan Bergman, Marilyn Bergman and Dave Grusin for “Just Getting Started” in If You’re Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast; Steve Martin’s “The Buddy Song” from his Netflix special with Martin Short; and Jonathan Coulton for “High Crimes and Misdemeanors” on The Good Fight.

Bruno Mars is up for Outstanding Music Direction for his CBS special shot at the Apollo Theater. Elton John’s guitarist and music director Davey Johnstone is up for the award as well for Elton John: I’m Still Standing—A Grammy Salute.

The 60th annual Grammy Awards received a nom for Outstanding Variety Special as did Jesus Christ Superstar In Concert.

Music supervision nominations went to Jen Malone and Fam Udeorji for Atlanta; Nora Felder for Stranger Things; Robin Urdang, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel; Jennifer Pyken for This is Us; and Sean O’Meara for Westworld.

Ramin Djadawadi is nominated twice in the Composition for a Series category, one for Game of Thrones and another for Westworld. Sean Callery, Mark Isham and W.G. Snuffy Walden are among the other nominees.

The 70 annual Emmy Awards will be televised on NBC on 9/17. For a full list of nominations, click here.
