VINNIE PAUL,
1964-2018

Vinnie Paul, best known as the drummer and co-founder of influential hard-rock band Pantera, died Friday in Las Vegas. He was 54.

News of his death was announced on Pantera's Facebook page, though a cause has not be disclosed. Furthermore, the message read,

"The family requests you please respect their privacy during this time."

Paul, born Vinnie Paul Abbott in Abilene, Texas, was also a songwriter and producer; he co-founded Pantera in 1981 with his brother "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott and, after the group broke up in 2003, the two launched DAMAGEPLAN. On 12/8/04, while performing with DAMAGEPLAN in Columbus, Ohio, Dimebag was shot and killed onstage; he was 38. Vinnie subsequently played in the metal supergroup Hellyeah, fronted by former Mudvayne singer Chad Gray.

In the wake of his brother's death, Vinnie released several Dimebag-related projects through his Big Vin Records label, including DVDs and the book He Came to Rock.
