A ROUNDUP OF
SUPER SYNCS

A super game saw some super syncs during Super Bowl LII, ranging from a lullabye arrangement of Nirvana’s “All Apologies” in a T-Mobile ad to Steven Tyler playing a race car driver for Kia.

The night saw Tyler posing in Formula One gear while Aerosmith’s “Dream On” played in the background, Eli Manning and Odell Beckham’s choreographing a Dirty Dancing-inspired touchdown dance to “Time of My Life” and Jon Pardi’s surrounded in Michelob Ultra suds with his “I Like Beer.” Big Sean explained the lyrics of "Bounce Back" in a Quicken Loans spot.

Carrie Underwood’s performance of “The Champion” made a splash at the top of The Kickoff Show a half-hour before the start of the game and during the highlight reel prior to the start of the third quarter. The performances drove the tune to the top of the iTunes song chart.

NBC, which broadcast the game, was big on its use of iconic tunes to promote the upcoming Olympics: Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire,” Ray Charles’ “America,” Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode,” David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance,” Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” and the overture for The Marriage of Figaro were all used to promote sports involving snow and ice.

Mountain Dew uncorked Missy Elliott’s “Get Ur Freak On,” Diet Coke poured Sam Gellaitry’s “Long Distance” and Budweiser tapped Skylar Grey’s cover of “Stand By Me.” Doritos worked with OMG’s “Look at Me Now,” Iggy Azalea f/Quavo’s “Savior” plugged in for Monster and Will Powers’ “Adventures in Success” was used for Square Space, whatever that might be.

We heard a metal remake of “We Will Rock You” and an interpretation of Jimi Hendrix’s version of Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower” for Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan for Amazon.

Whoever came up with the musical selections for NBC Sports exhibited advanced knowledge of the teams playing and the location, using The Cars, J. Geils Band and Boston for Beantown, Hall & Oates for Philly, Prince’s “1999” and Semisonic's "Closing Time" for the Twin Cities as bumpers.

Ads during the pre-game had an eclectic mix of tunes as well:

Lionel Richie’s “All Night Long” for AmeriTrade, The Ramones cover of “Little Bit o’ Soul” in a Fidelty ad, DNCE’s “Dance” in the promo spot for NBC’s World of Dance and Meb$a’s “Nothing Like This” for Old Navy.

And if you were really playing close attention, you heard Terence Balanchard’s “Fruit of Islam” from the soundtrack to Malcolm X for Blacture.com.

In between the commercials, the Philadelphia Eagles won their first-ever Super Bowl, defeating the New England Patriots, 41-33.
