LATE NIGHT RESPONDS TO VEGAS SHOOTINGS

Late night television responded solemnly to the mass shootings at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas Sunday night. Monologues opened on notes of empathy and dread before turning to thoughts about heroism, unity and legislation.

Jimmy Kimmel, who grew up in Las Vegas, got choked up before asking viewers to reach out to politicians to get laws changed. “Something needs to be done already,” he said.

Miley Cyrus opened the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with a performance of Dido's "No Freedom."

Stephen Colbert said “Congress can become heroes by doing anything. Doing nothing is cowardice” before urging Trump to “pass any kind of common sense gun control legislation.”

James Corden said “we’re hearing stories of bravery and heroism…11,660 people have died from gun violence in 275 days. It’s hard for me to fathom. Gun violence should not be a staple of American life.”

Conan O’Brien’s “terrible and numbing” day at work began with his head writer presenting him with the remarks he made after Sandy Hook and Pulse nightclub shootings. That mass shootings are too commonplace, he wondered “What does this say about us?”

Trevor Noah noted there have been 20 mass shootings in the two years since he moved to New York. “I feel like people are becoming more accustomed to it.”
