The Top 5 Highest-Grossing Films in America Over the Weekend

Warner Bros.' Stephen King flick It became the highest-grossing September opening of all time in just eight days, according to Box Office Mojo. The film spends its second weekend at the top of the domestic box office, tacking on another $60m. It's followed by two debuts—Lionsgate's American Assassin and Paramount's Darren Aronofsky-directed mother!, which earned a truly terrible F CinemaScore from initial audiences.

It is soon expected to surpass 1973's The Exorcist by becoming the top-grossing R-rated horror film of all time.
