VMAS: WINNERS, PERFORMERS AND MORE

Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran and Khalid were among the big winners at the 2017 MTV VMAs hosted by Katy Perry.

The evening saw Taylor Swift debut her cinematic new video, as well as performances by, among others, Lamar, Sheeran with Lil Uzi Vert, Miley Cyrus, Shawn Mendes, Demi Lovato, Alessia Cara, Lorde, Julia Michaels, Fifith Harmony with Gucci Mane, Rod Stewart & DNCE, James Arthur, host Perry with Nicki Minaj, Thirty Seconds to Mars (who also paid tribute to the late Chester Bennington), Video Vanguard recipient P!nk (who offered a medley of hits and a thoughtful speech) and Logic (with Cara, Khalid and a host of suicide-attempt survivors), whose performance of "1-800-273-8255" brought the audience to its feet.

Logic and presenter Paris Jackson made the most overt political statements about equality, but much of the evening was marked by references to the divided political landscape, notably when Rev. Robert Wright Lee, a progressive pastor and descendant of Robert E. Lee, decried racism as America's "original sin" and brought out Susan Bro, the mother of Heather Heyer, who died protesting right-wing extremists in Charlottesville; the latter enjoined the audience to carry on the fight for equality and announced th launch of the Heather Heyer Foundation.
