JOHN ABERCROMBIE,
1944-2017

Jazz guitarist John Abercrombie, an active leader and sideman for Universal Music Group’s ECM label for more than 40 years, died Tuesday at the Hudson Valley Hospital outside of Peekskill, N.Y. He was 72.

Known for a spare, eloquent style, Abercrombie made his ECM debut in 1974 and released his final album, Up and Coming, in January. After studying blues, R&B, rock & roll, Ornette Coleman, Wes Montgomery and Barney Kessell in high school and college, Abercrombie played with leaders of fusion movement—Billy Cobham, The Brecker Brothers—before making 40+ albums as a leader or co-leader.

Beyond his albums as a leader, he played in the Gateway trio with Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette, was a member of DeJohnette’s Directions band in the ‘70s and Charles Lloyd’s group between 1999 and 2002, and recorded duo albums with Ralph Towner.

DeJohnette wrote on Facebook, “It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of our dear friend and fellow musician, John Abercrombie. John was a big part of my life and early musical adventures. The Gateway trio was one of the highlights of my life. He was not only a great musician but also a great human being and will be greatly missed. His musical contribution will live forever. Miss you brother but will always hear you. You are now truly Timeless. Be at peace.”
