SONY/ATV AND MIJAC MUSIC RENEW THEIR VOWS

Sony/ATV and the Michael Jackson Estate have extended the admin deal for Jackson’s Mijac Music catalog. The re-upping of the deal is a big get for Sony/ATV chieftain Marty Bandier.

Today’s announcement comes 16 months after Sony Corp. acquired the 50% of Sony/ATV held by the Estate to attain full ownership of the world’s largest music publisher for $750m.

Founded by MJ in 1980 to house his own music, Mijac expanded over the years to also include the Sly and the Family Stone catalog, songs by Philly-soul auteurs Gamble & Leon Huff and tunes associated with Ray Charles, Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin.

Along the way, Jackson also picked up a host of classics including (in alphabetical order) “Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now,” “After Midnight,” “Ease on Down the Road,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher,” “I Got A Woman,” “If You Don’t Know Me By Now,” “Love Train,” “Mr. Bojangles,” “People Get Ready,” “Runaround Sue,” “Shake, Rattle and Roll,” “Sixteen Candles,” “The Wanderer,” “What’d I Say,” “When a Man Loves a Woman” and “You Don’t Know Me.”

“Michael Jackson’s Mijac catalog is one of the most significant and valuable in music,” Bandier noted in his official statement. “Michael’s songwriting talents are respected and admired by everyone, but I also want to acknowledge his gifts as a smart businessman who put together an incredible catalog of classic songs. His Estate continues to further his vision, and we’re privileged to be the administrators of such an important collection of songs.”

Estate co-executors John Branca and John McClain delivered their joint quote in close harmony. “The incredible songs in the Mijac Music catalog showcase Michael’s creative genius as a songwriter,” they harmonized, “and further, his acumen in understanding the creative and commercial value of these acclaimed third-party songs. We trust in Martin Bandier’s leadership and in his team. The music of the greatest entertainer that ever lived, Michael Jackson, is in the hands of the #1 publishing company in the world.”
