SNL LEADS EMMY NOMS WITH 22

Saturday Night Live and Westworld lead the field in Emmy nominations as the two series each received 22 noms. It’s new day for the awards as, for the first time, they honor music supervisors.

The first class of nominees in the category of Outstanding Music Supervision are Thomas Globic (Better Call Saul), Susan Jacobs (Big Little Lies), Manish Raval, Jonathan Leahy and Tom Wolfe (Girls), Zach Cowie and Kerri Drootin (Master of None) and Nora Felder (Stranger Things). Each is nominated for a specific episode.

Other musicians and music-related shows received noms, starting with NBC’s The Voice, which received 11 noms, including Reality Competition Series. The 59th annual Grammy Awards received lighting and sound nominations.

Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl halftime show earned six nominations, including one in the Music Direction category where Rickey Minor is nominated twice—for Stayin Alive: A Grammy Salute to the Music of The Bee Gees and Taking the Stage: African American Music and Stories That Changed America. Jack White and T Bone Burnett are in the category as well for American Epic: The American Epic Sessions.

Among the nominees for songs are “We Tapped That Ass” from Adam Schlesinger, Rachel Bloom and Jack Dolgen for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and Common, Robert Glasper and Karriem Riggins’ “Letter to the Free” from 13th.

Nominees in score categories include Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe (Genius), Jeff Beal (House of Cards), James Newton Howard (A Series of Unfortunate Events) and Tonic’s Jeff Russo (Fargo).

Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors is a nominee for Outstanding Television Movie; Carpool Karaoke Primetime Special 2017 is contending for Outstanding Variety Special; and Ron Howard’s Beatles film Eight Days a Week—The Touring Years is up for Outstanding Doc.

Donald Glover, known to the music world as Childish Gambino, is up for directing an episode of his comedy series Atlanta. And Snoop Dogg is undoubtedly firing up a spliff to celebrate his nomination for host of a reality show.

Atlanta and Master of None are up for Outstanding Comedy Series against black-ish, Modern Family, Silicon Valley, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Veep. Five first-timers are among seven nominees in the Drama Series category: Better Call Saul, The Crown, The Handmaid’s Tale, House of Cards, Stranger Things, This Is Us and Westworld.
