BRUISED APPLE: PLANET OF THE APPS FALLS FLAT

Apple Music’s rollout of original content is getting off to a lurching start, with game show Planet of the Apps getting panned across the board. The tone of the media reaction is exemplified by the Business Insider review, which observes, “the real shame here is that Apple has produced nine more episodes.”

Critics weren’t swayed by the star power on the judges’ panel, which includes Jessica Alba and Gwyneth Paltrow. Beats 1’s ever-enthusiastic Zane Lowe is the host.

The reception from Wall Street has been equally skeptical. “Simply put, Apple's original-content strategy is unlikely to achieve either its financial or strategic goals,” The Motley Fool concludes. “So what's the point?”

In Apple’s defense, Planet of the Apps wasn’t intended to be the first taste of the premium service’s original offerings, but it was pressed into service when the premiere of proven winner Carpool Karaoke was bumped to August.
