U2 KICKS OFF JOSHUA TREE TOUR (UPDATE)

Bono brought Eddie Vedder onstage on the first weekend of The Joshua Tree tour in Seattle, asking for his help in singing "Mothers of the Disappeared." Mumford & Sons, who opened the show, joined in as well at Century Link Field. How appropriate for Mother’s Day.

Bono had dedicated "Ultraviolet (Light My Way)" to Mother's Day, praising people involved in the post-election resistance movement. The Seattle show was the second night of the tour, which opened Friday in Vancouver, B.C.

The band’s 23-song set kicked off with “Sunday Bloody Sunday” in a five-song block prior to playing Joshua Tree in full; “Mothers of the Disappeared” is the final track on the album released 30 years ago.

The band performed another seven songs, including the new one “The Little Things That Give You Away,” “Beautiful Day,” “One” and their first hit, “I Will Follow.”

The Joshua Tree Tour continues Wednesday in Santa Clara with two Rose Bowl shows coming up on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are still available for the Pasadena shows, but 21 of their 30 upcoming stadium shows in the U.S. and Europe are sold out.

“It’s really a celebration of that album but done with new spirit, from where they currently are," manager Guy Oseary told us from the road. "It’s been the soundtrack to so many people’s lives."

"When tickets went on sale and we sold 1.1m in a day, that was a confirmation that this album resonates. This idea resonates," Guy O added. "It’s one thing to think about in your own cave; it’s another to see what the response is."

"Sometimes it’s hard to remember I’m the manager, because I so easily fall into being a fan," the manager confided. "I know I have a lot of work to do tonight and there are a lot of moving parts, but it’s such an exciting show to be part of. It’s really magical."
