CHECK-OUT TIME AT HOTEL CALIFORNIA
The Todos Santos hotel in Mexico’s Baja California may not be on a dark, desert highway, but if The Eagles have their way, the owners are done dancing in the courtyard.
Eagles Ltd., the band’s Santa Monica-based corporation, has filed suit in U.S. District Court alleging trademark infringement against the owners of the 11-room Todos Santos hotel in Baja California Sur.
In the suit, The Eagles contend that the hotel is selling Hotel California merchandise and, through advertising targeted to U.S. consumers, leads guests to believe that the Todos Santos Hotel is associated with the Eagles and served as the inspiration for the song’s lyrics. "Hotel California" and other Eagles songs are piped into the hotel sound system.
The Eagles are getting some of their information from online reviews.
The lawsuit seeks a variety of damages and a halt to any infringement.
The Todos Santos hotel dates back to 1950 when it was indeed named Hotel California. But different owners changed the name until John and Debbie Stewart, who bought it in 2001, reverted back to Hotel California.
