Insiders say Tom Mackay is signing a deal to become head of a new division concentrating on music, film and TV for Sony Music. The veteran exec spent nearly 20 years at Republic, having joined the company at its inception, and most recently serving as West Coast EVP/GM. He enjoyed huge success there with, among other projects, the soundtracks for Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Darker, as well as the TV smash The Voice, on which he served as a conduit between the show and the label.
Mackay's brother, Jim "Bones" Mackay, is the caddy for Phil Mickelson; Tom himself is a scratch golfer. In a possibly related story, a highly placed figure at this publication recently threw his nine-iron into a water hazard.
