PRESIDENT GLAUBER: AN AUSTIN UPDATE

Spoon's Britt Daniel, KG and Mac from Merge

Beware the Ides of March! Any other Wednesday at this time, I’d be in my shrink’s office in Westwood, peeling away the layers of my damaged psyche (thanks, Mom). Like clockwork, Lenny will ask after every appointment, “Aren’t you cured, yet?” Today, however, I’ve already watched U.K. sensations Sundara Karma play an incredible set to a crowd of beer-drinking, BBQ-eating attendees, as sponsored by our friends at StubHub (your source for last-minute baseball tickets). Matt from Kansas City and Kim from Albany were my guests, and they could easily pass themselves off as a Matt & Kim cover band. We segued from Sundara Karma to a Showtime-sponsored Zipper Club show, and now I’m charging my phone before the C3 party at Stubb’s.

While, for most, SXSW is an opportunity for music discovery, I stick with seeing bands whose careers I take more seriously than my own. Spoon is celebrating the 3/17 release of their new record, Hot Thoughts with three consecutive nights at the old Emo’s (which they’ve renamed Eno’s, in honor of drummer Jim Eno).

Last night’s show was a who’s who of, well, my friends: All of John Silva’s gang, plus Gerard, Chris and Patrick from Matador, Mac from Merge Records, radio legend Norm Winer, WFUV’s Rita Houston, Amazon Music’s Rich McLaughlin, KCMP’s Jim McGuinn and David Safar and Columbia’s Brady Bedard, plus lots of musicians I know and love. I’ve seen Spoon close to 100 times (maybe more?) in the 12 years I’ve toiled on their behalf, and last night’s show was by far the best I’ve seen from them.

Tonight’s musical agenda includes Lo Moon, Bishop Briggs, Gutxi Bibang, Mark Eitzel, Youngr, Real Estate, Missio and Spoon. Now, however, I’m going to kiss some radio ass.
