U.K. CHARTS: LA LA LANDS AT #1

It is indeed La La Land in Blighty as the celebrated film’s soundtrack (Polydor) tops the Official Albums Chart. It is the first soundtrack to top the U.K. charts since Les Miserables did it in 2013.

Four weeks after its release, La La Land has knocked Pete Tong’s Classic House (UMG) down to #2.

"This is fantastic,” the film’s Music Director and Executive Music Producer Marius De Vries told OfficialCharts.com. “We always knew as we were working on it that we were working on something special, but you can never anticipate whether that specialness will translate into universal—or even partial—public acceptance.

“On those rare occasions when it does, it's always a treat. It's a great testament to the enormous amount of hard work the entire team put in.”

Indie band Deaf Havana are new at #5 with All These Countless Nights (So Recordings), while Little Mix stay at #3 with Glory Days (SYCO).

Despite a midweek peak of #5, singer/songwriter Lucy Spraggan has ended the week at #12 with I Hope You Don't Mind Me Writing (CTRL02)—ahead of Train’s 10th album a girl, a bottle, a boat (Columbia) at #13. Culture (Quality Control) by U.S. hip-hop group Migos lands at #16.

Atlantic’s Ed Sheeran, meanwhile, is in both the Official Singles and albums Top 5. Sheeran’s comeback has sparked back catalog sales as his second album x jumps six places to #4 while the single “Shape of You” sold 47k downloads and 8.8m streams this week to up its total sales to 306k and 42.9m to date, and stay firmly put at #1. “Castle on the Hill” follows at #2.

(Isn’t it interesting that the OCC keeps reporting split sales figures, rather than combined totals. Is Blighty moving away from lumping sales and streams together?)

On the singles chart, Jax Jones and Raye’s “You Don’t Know Me” (Polydor) holds at #3, as does Little Mix at #4 with "Touch" (SYCO). The Chainsmokers enter the Top 5 with “Paris” (RCA) at #5.
