CHART STORY OF STARS

La La Land ST Goes #1 in Sales, While The Weeknd Dominates SPS

It’s no secret that The Weeknd is a streaming monster. He even ended 2016 as the seventh-biggest SPS artist of the year. So, it makes perfect sense that, with approximately 62k, his Starboy (XO/Republic) goes #1 on the HITS Sales Plus Streaming (SPS) Chart for its second time in 2017 (Remember: the set debuted at #1 back in early December 2016).

And thanks to big box office and one stellar Golden Globes night that left La La Land with seven awards (including Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy), the Interscope-helmed soundtrack soars #13-2, earning 43k.

Indeed, soundtracks continue to make waves this awards season. Aside from La La Land, there’s Disney’s Moana at #3, Uptown’s Hamilton at #6, RCA’s Trolls at #15, Republic’s Sing at #17 and WMG’s Suicide Squad: The Album at #22.

The only debut to make the Top 15 this week is the Dropkick Murphys’ independently released 11 Short Stories of Pain & Glory, which bows at #14 with 19k.

Chris Stapleton’s Traveller (Mercury Nashville), which leaps #22-9 with an additional 22k, owes its boost to a viral video a young lady posted on YouTube of her father singing along to “Tennessee Whiskey” in the car. If you haven’t already checked it out, do yourself a favor and remedy that quick—man’s got pipes.

Meanwhile, just as they drop what sounds like another hit single, The Chainsmokers Collage (Disruptor/Columbia) jumps #18-11, and Ed Sheeran’s X (Asylum) re-enters at a lofty #23, powered in large part by the buzz surrounding his two new singles.

As the Grammys near and the “who’ll win what” chatter gets louder, a few nominated artists can be seen holding their own on the chart. For example, Beyoncé’s Lemonade (Columbia)—an Album of the Year contender—breaks back into the Top 25. And Chance the Rapper, who’s up for Best New Artist, sees his acclaimed Coloring Book rise #49-33.

To celebrate, we’ll be spending the long weekend funneling down large amounts of spiked lemonade—something we swear we don’t already do regularly.

When it comes to SPS marketshare, UMG leads at #1 with 54%. Then there’s WMG at #2 with 28% and SME at #3 with 16%.

Over on the Album Sales Chart, the La La Land ST makes it to #1 with about 31k. There, the Dropkick Murphys album rounds out the Top 3 with north of 18k.

And the results from the Album Sales marketshare battle look similar to the SPS rankings, with UMG leading the chart at #1 with 48%, while WMG and SME follow with 35% and 16%, respectively.

Streeting this week are albums from Warner Bros. The Flaming Lips and Young TurksThe xx.

In other news, suites at the Moscow Ritz-Carlton are still available, now with extra-waterproof furniture and deluxe surveillance.
